Best used 4x4 under $13k daily driver about 60 miles a day

Exactly what the title says...
Got baby number 2 arriving here in about 5 months and need to free up some cash for an additional daycare payment.
I'm thinking the most expensive vehicle I want will be about $13k. I want a 4 wheel drive, with enough power to pull a 24 ft bay boat. Needs 4 full doors to accommodate these kiddos.
I have been looking at older 3/4 ton diesels with a lot of miles and 1/2 tons with a lot of miles. Was thinking I may be missing some great vehicles and just needed some outside input.
The Lexus/Toyota Landcruiser thread yesterday is what got me thinking.
This will need to be reliable as I drive across the causeway everyday and would like at least 15 mpg. These 04-06 1/2 tons all have around 150k miles, which is kinda scary, but maybe I'm getting too caught up in that or depends on the make of the truck.
Thoughts?

did this exact thing a few years ago. Ended up buying a 2003 f250 4 door lariat with the 7.3 diesel. Pulled my FIL's 24 ft baychamp easily. had 187,000 miles on it when i bought it. Paid 11k for it. That's the route to go for sure.

I've been thinking of going that route, but those miles scare the shite out of me, you havent had any problems?
also, people scare me talking about these Ford diesels... but looks wise, an F250 is what I would want

What about a 99-03 F250 with a 7.3? Seems like one of those meets your criteria and can be had in that price range. High mileage on a 7.3 doesn't really worry me as long as it wasn't abused, plus 15mpg will be easily done, the 2wd 7.3 I had regularly got 20+ but that was with a chip in it.

you are looking for a diamond in the rough for a 1/2 ton. My guess would be diesel over a 1/2 ton with that many miles and pulling a heavy boat
How often are you pulling the boat? Could you borrow a family member's truck to pull the boat? then maybe you could get away with a 4 door Tacoma if you want to give up a little cab room. this may fit your price and mpg requirements a little better

anyone will tell you the 7.3 is unstoppable. They are the only right thing Ford has ever done. All i have done is change the oil and a little maintenance on the front end (sway bar linkages, tie rod ends, upper/lower ball joints). I will tell you it is one of the best trucks ive ever owned. I would get in it and drive it to alaska at any given moment. It is solid as a rock. It was a one owner truck and never had a ball in the bed.

I got mine in TX for $13.5k with just under 100k on it. I don't think I'd get 15mpg if it was sitting on a flatbed. You're not gonna find something that'll get good fuel mileage unless you get an older diesel with a tuner

good to know, i get confused on which engines to avoid
the tacoma is a good idea, but with two car seats i think it will be a little cramped

Do you have a tow vehicle right now? If yes, have you considered buying a little beater commuter car and keeping your truck?
A friend of mine bought an S60 for $500. This is an extreme example but proof you can grab a cheap reliable car.
300 miles a week is a lot but if you could get a car for $2k that will do 25 mpg reliably, you can save about $100 month in fuel. It would obviously take a while before you broke into money saving territory but I'm willing to bet you would save more money going this route than getting rid of whatever you have now and buying a high mileage truck.

The 6.6 and 5.9 are also good engines that'll get some pretty solid fuel mileage numbers

The 4.6 was the best gas motor they ever made. Have 1/4 million miles on mine and it sounds like the day my dad bought it brand new.

In this truck market your going to be buying something well worn in, but if it has been taken care of that might not be an issue.
I doubt your missing anything, your likely looking at something built around 2005 give or take a few years, and your probably looking at around 150,000 miles. I think you already know that.
The only thing I wanted to tell you is if you want to look in a big search area I like the website
Car gurus
You search by make or body style. The website will sort what they consider to be great deals based on price, average deals, and bad deals. Most of the stuff listed is by dealers. I think it's a good website to search and include the big markets like Houston, Dallas, etc.

Idk if Land cruisers offer bigger tanks, but all of the bigger trucks do. Gives you the perception that you are spending less on fuel.....until the end of the month when the statement comes

150 in a modern truck isn't scary. I have 285k on a 4.6 E150 and the engine looks factory fresh.
