I would like this thread to be fairly broad and also fairly specific.

1. In your opinion, what are the best states 3-5 or so overall for fishing (saltwater, freshwater, brackish, rivers, streams, lakes, etc)

2. In your opinion, what are the best states, 3-5 or so, strictly for saltwater fishing?

3. In your opinion, what are the best states, 3-5 or so,strictly for freshwater fishing?

4. In your opinion, what are the best states, 3-5 or so, for fly fishing for trout?

5. In your opinion, how would you rank the Southeast for fishing? Ex: Louisiana is excellent for deep sea fishing, fishing for reds, etc...North Carolina has saltwater fishing and excellent fly fishing in the Blue Ridge Mountains, etc..

Florida for all around best probably, tons of huge bass, just about every kind of saltwater species available.

Louisiana is way up there.

California has it all though, saltwater, mountain trout, one of the best largemouth fisheries in the world etc.

It's gotta be Florida or Louisiana. I prefer Louisiana because I fish here way more but both have great fisheries.

Between Toledo Bend and the delta/Venice Louisiana can compete with any state for largemouth bass.

Saca-crapi-perches is up there too especially in those big oxbow lakes.

I've not inshore fished Florida to compare, but you can go 1-2 miles off the east coast of Florida and catch pretty much anything.

I'm not sure how you compare the Gulf, once you start chasing blue water, but in close the platforms allow stucture to have its own little ecosystem and that's much more prevalent and concentrated in the Louisiana/Texas coast than a lot of places.

With the exception of fly fishing for trout in a mountain stream Louisiana is competitive in all areas.

I mean, the trout are there but in my admittedly limited knowledge it's nothing compared to the opportunities out west.

My top 5:
Alaska
California
Florida
Louisiana
Texas

Saltwater:
Florida
La
Alaska
Hawaii

Fresh:
California
Florida
Texas

Fly:
Montana
Alaska
Wyoming

There are some amazing fisheries in the southeast. The we have everything from trout in the streams in Georgia to Peacock Bass in the canals in south Florida, to bonefish in the keys. As far as diversification the southeastern US is probably tops in the country all things considered.

No Louisiana?

I know that Louisiana's deep sea fishing is probably not the best of the best, but it's up there in the top 5, and the redfish and trout fisheries are hands down the best in the nation. I would think that would get it a mention on everyone's saltwater list.

No clue

It's very good. Depends on what you include in the SE IMO. If it includes TX, OK, AR, KY, VA and then south and east to the Gulf or Atlantic, then it is excellent. If you take out TX, OK, VA then you lose some of that.

Overall:

New York - If I had to fish one lake for the rest of my life, it would be Erie, such a variety of species

Texas - Lots of places to fish, both fresh and salt. Salt is as good as anywhere in the gulf, except for the long arse boat rides the farther north you are

Florida - Big ol' bass. Saltwater has the same problem as texas on the gulf side

California - Lots of places to fish, fresh and salt, biggest variety of any state I believe

Louisiana - Like TX or FL except you don't have to deal with the continental shelf.

No Order to these, home cooking to these because I am picking where I would want to go.

1. Florida/California/North Carolina

2. Florida/California/Louisiana

3. Pick one (Montana/Colorado/Wyoming)/North Carolina/Tennessee

4. Pick one (Montana/Colorado/Wyoming)/North Carolina/Tennessee

Sorry about lumping the western states, just pick your favorite. I'm just too partial to my mountain home.

5. Very high, the entire coast of the southeast is amazing fishing. Blue Ridge is truly amazing for fly fishing, even with the small fish, they are a challenge to catch and so very rewarding. We have some fantastic lakes to fish. Some of the best in the country. You cannot complain about fishing in this part of the country, we are very lucky.

Ok?

I guess that answers my question.

Not a mention of Oregon in here and I guess that's only because of the lack of fishing there. Just as I don't have a clue about Michigan.

Alabama's crappie, small mouth, and largemouth fishing is right behind Cali and Florida. Our river systems, which is controlled by APC, specifically targets recreation, and keeps the fisheries extremely healthy. Also, catching bluegill on a light fly rod is some of the best fishing I have ever done.

ETA:

We also have a sub species of bass called redeye that can challenge trout in terms of fight on a line.
