Best prices for handguns in Baton Rouge?

Jim’s? Academy? Cabela’s? Bass Pro?
I am in the market for my first handgun and have no idea who has the best prices in the BTR area. Are they all basically the same? Besides price…is there an advantage to buying from one of these versus the others?

No to price Jims or Bowies. But they will give you best customer service and attention with knowledge. Sup, Carson.
Cabelas and BPS will be a little bit cheaper but not much
Best prices will be online

I thought about online but as I mentioned, this would be my first handgun so I kind of want to get the feel of a few of them before I buy one. I see where some say that one type/brand of gun just fits their hands better than others so I need to test that out. In the future, online will be an option but for my first...local is probably better for me.

Academy usually has the best prices in my experience. Bass Pro is always over priced.

If you have a gun range that has try before you buy, you should narrow down to a few choices and do it.

Go to a store to hold the gun. But buy the gun online if you can find it cheaper >$50. Cabelas, for example, will transfer the online gun to you for a $25 fee.

Ok...so who knows if anyone in Baton Rouge offers this option?

You can rent guns at Precision, but I'm not sure about their variety.

Ferrara Firearms has very good prices. Guy doesn't keep an enormous inventory in the store, but he has your standard Glocks, Springfields, Smith & Wessons, etc. and can probably get whatever you're looking for.
Not sure where you're located but Interstate Guns in Hammond also has pretty low prices. Talk to Dustin if you go/call there.
I would also suggest buying from any local stores before national stores like Bass Pro, Cabela's, or Academy

Yep, precision does it and they will carry the major brands. Like glock, M&P

This^. If you want to actually shoot some before purchasing this would be my advice.
If you want excellent customer service and input in picking out your first handgun, I strongly advise going to Bowie Outfitters. They have excellent and knowledgeable employees who would be happy to assist you. They're a good group of dudes.
Some other questions though:
1. What's your experience level shooting handguns? Did you grow up hunting and just now getting into handguns or are you jumping right into gun ownership without prior knowledge? I would highly advise you get some training if the latter is the case.
2. What do you have your eyes on for your first handgun? I would highly advise a full sized 9mm because that's usually what I suggest to anyone, but I want to see where your mind is at first.
Welcome to the OB.

I would go to jims, pick up and hold which ever guns you like, get a feel for them, and then call ferrera up and save 60-100 bucks depending on brand.
Jims has a massive inventory, that's why say go there to look. They are way over priced, most prices around msrp

I know them well. Support the local stores. At least drop in and give them a shot. (No pun intended)

what about Hebert Guns?
I don't have a problem paying a little more for customer service at Bowie, Jim's is luck of the draw on who is behind the counter, much like Cabela's or BPS.

Thank you very much for your help.
Zero experience with handguns, but yes, I have done a decent amount of hunting growing up so I am familiar, comfortable and aware of what I am doing with guns in general. I have just never shot a handgun before.
My brother is a LEO and he suggested a full size 9mm as well so that is where I will start. My plan is to get one for home defense and once I am comfortable with that gun, get a smaller one for concealed carry.
I'll start with one of the locals then. Appreciate the help guys.

Your brother is a smart dude because that's the exact route I would suggest.
Best of luck and keep us posted on what you end up buying.

This is what I'm in the middle of doing. I bought the Springfield XD 9mm 4" in June. Waiting on my LTC to be approved and will probably buy the Shield 9mm 3" to carry.

Go to a store to hold the gun.
As has been suggested, go shoot some "regular" sized handguns in 9mm.
Then go buy a 9mm Glock or a 9mm M&P.
