Yeah I'm pretty sure the baja claws are directional. If you're cool with that they handle mud like a champ, but I don't see them being too good on the road.
Trail grapplers sound like your best bet honestly. Decent tire, decent price, and a long tread life.

Well pretty much the three best on the market are the MTR w kevlar, Open Country MT, and KM2, from my personal expoerence, but I am using them in the rocks as well. I liked the Mickey MTZ's for what I used them for and they lasted a long time on the street. Have also heard good things about the nittos.
Where are you pricing them?
Try Marcus @ rivercity offroad, his email is River City Offroad <marcusarose@gmail.com>, He has done good pricing for me in the past and has been able to get hard to find tires. I believe he is out of houston

Pricing locally. The place that does tires on ourt company vehicle gave me a price on the M Thompsons and a price on BFG KMs

You should check the prices for my MTR w/kevlar, I have a set of 40's and 37's, those frickers arent cheap. But for your size I would assume you should be able to find something good in the 2-250 range. What are your uses for the tires? just mud?
My favorites as of recent are the Mickey T's. I had a set of MTZs and now have a set of ATZs. After going from 2 sets of old BFG M/Ts, 2 sets of Swampers, and a set of Mickey Thompson MTZs, I was amazed how quiet the ATZs are.
From my experience, which is much more than most, the Toyos, Pro Comps, and Nittos dont do that well in the mud. New KM2s don't do that well in the mud either. Just flat out don't get the Baja Claws or Mud Grapplers. They slide all over as soon as you get in any type of off-camber situation. If you want something that agressive, get SSRs. They are light years ahead of any other tire in the mud. You will be amazed at how well they pull. Had good road manners too. Can get them for cheap as all hell if you go to Rayne.
Best mud tires for the price, IMO, would be the MT MTZs, Goodyear Duratracs, or the Cooper Discover STTs. They all do better than most in the mud. I got ~40k out of my MTZs on a 7500lb truck. The Mickey Thompsons are expensive, but they are a very well designed tire. Only on-road mud tire I have ever seen better is the original BFG M/Ts

Maybe I had bad set, but mine were terrible. I got maybe 30k on a 1/2 ton Chevy and I kept them rotated/aligned. I had a few chunks of tread break off too, but that was probably my fault.

Maxxis Mudder Buckshots are what we use on our trucks. My dad's been running them for 10 or 15 years and gets 50-60k out of them. They don't really look that cool, but get the job done... And we have to go through some pathetic land to get to a few pivot engines.

I had the old ones for all of about 4-5k miles and on a different jeep, so not really sure on a true comparison, but they started slightly cupping and had horrible noise in that short time. I hvae about 10k on my 37's, about 90/10 road vs dirt, and the 40's about 10/90 with about 3k. I love them better than the KM2's, and probably the best tire Ive used in a while. Although I am using on a Jeep in a more rocky terrain as opposed to a truck in the mud

I have these in 285/75/16 on a 3/4 ton chevy and i don't think they will make it much past 30k if any. Only about 8k on them and they are showing wear.

Buckshots, master craft M/T, Remington mud brute just to name a few.
I'm running BFG KM2s right now and they're a great tire but not worth the extra cost IMO

I've got Hankook Dynapro MT's and I love them. They aren't extremely loud, and they have a good tread pattern and last a while.

when i was pricing 33's fo rmy jeep there was negligible difference between the price of buckshots and KM2s.

Its between the km2s and coopers. about 30 dollar difference
