Best "mom gun". My mom text me today. Said she was looking. I suggested a handgun class (not CHL) basic education.

I also suggest a revolver. SHE mentioned a .38. I see no reason to talk her out of it.

She asked about a Colt 45. I lol'd. As I can see her face when she fired one the first time or my dads when he saw a Colts price point.

When I think revolvers I only think S&W? Ruger I know are blah as a semi auto and Taurus can be outright trash. But their revolver offerings I am ignorant to the quality.

Price point she gave was under $500

No pics. She is 64.

Thanks in advance

Roger LCR is what I bought for my MIL a couple of years back. I liked it so much that I got one for me to carry.

Nothing wrong with ruger revolvers, get a gp100 with grips that she is comfortable with

Will it be as nice as a smith n Wesson? No but she ain't going to shoot it enough to know the diffrence.

I believe my own opinion is creeping in with that statement.

They just don't do it for me.

Used glock 19 or M&P w/ surefire light

Stats show most home invasions or robberies are done with multiple assailants. I wouldn't want my Mom at home with only 5 shots

Fair enough statement,, chocolate-vanilla.

But, I know a lot on this board, including myself that would argue til dawn to your original statement about Ruger being blah, re: wheels or semis.. Actually one of the best quality/price brands,,, but, that's jmy opinion.. They do it for me.

5 shots are better than zero. I'd be afraid my mom would have issues with a magazine and slide. The assailants may run in fear of the noise my mom would make after her hand got "bit" in the slide or breech.

If I thought it were something she would grow to enjoy? Target shooting etc. then I am with you. But we are talking about my Pinterest and crafts Mom here.

I think the S&W .38 is just what you are looking for...a relative of mine has one called the "lady smith" that has a bit smaller grip so it fits her hand well. check it out

Good suggestion.

Why does everyone else think she needs to get a 5 shot/lightweight/snubnose revolver? This is for a home defense gun, not concealed carry. Consequently, a full size, steel revolver is the better choice. Chamber it in 357 Mag and let her shoot 38+P. Heck, S&W also makes 8 shot revolvers. Although Ruger doesn't have the "pizzaz" of S&W, there's nothing wrong w/ their quality , reliability or workmanship.

Be sure she's comfortable w/ a revolver. If she can handle a full size semi-auto, a full size 9mm would be a good choice, as well.

VERY important: You're more than welcome to point her a good direction w/ her purchase, but the final choice needs to be HERS, not YOURS. Otherwise, chances are she'll never like your choice as well as she needs to.

Do people really not always have one in the chamber of their carry/defense gun?

If she wants a revolver and isn't going to conceal it, get a full sized 6 shot revolver in .357 magnum. They are substantially easier to shoot than any small 5 shot .38

She can use everything from light .38 specials all the way up to buffalo bore .357 mag screamers depending on what she's comfortable with.

Kids. Mine is crafty enough to snoop and find mine. He's not strong enough to chamber one though.

Gun safe? Pricey for a good one and I can chamber a round in the time it would take me to open any safe.

And that's me. Mom would be even more worried.

What about a heavy .38 snub nose? Does not need to be some light weight allow.

I've shot a buddies 380LCP, and I get what you are saying regarding weight. That little bastard comes alive in your hand. The lack of weight and nose weight creates a torque on the wrist.

I envision something a cop would carry in 1975. Or more a detective. Heavy but comfy and will always go BANG.

Years of bad advice multiplied by internet forums. A full size handgun packs way more advantages for home defense; more capacity, better weight balance, easier to manipulate, better recoil characteristics, etc. than a compact one. I keep my G26 handy but if I didn't have it my next choice would be my 92FS or .357 GP100 MC. Both are a pleasure to shoot, the GP100 makes even stout .38 SPC defense loads feel like the softest 9mm loads my 92FS can cycle.

For a home defense gun, what advantage(s) does a heavy snub nose have over a full size steel revolver? All things being equal, a snub nose revolver will be challenging to shoot than a full size revolver.

I dont know

That's why I ask. Most of the full sized revolvers I've seen creep up past their price point, as they appear nicer. I have not been looking long though. Just got posed the question today.
