Never had an issue with any of the All Star rods from Academy when I needed a cheap rod.

ETA: Looks like they have the Abu Garcia Veritas 2.0 on sale for $49, normally $99. I've checked them out in the store a few times, looks like decent rods.

As already said, All stars and the Veritas on clearance at Academy. I don’t remember the exact price but I think I paid around $60 for them, but another one I’d recommend is the Lew’s American Hero rods. They are also sold at Academy. I have a couple of them and they are actually some of my favorite rods. They feel great in my hand, excellent casting, and the action and power are exactly what I imagine they should be for what they’re rated.

ETA: looks like they’re $69.

I got an Abu Vendetta to complete a cheaper combo with a Caenan for topwater and for my dad to use a couple months ago and have been really impressed with it. I don't know how it compares to the model that steps down a little but if they're similar I wouldn't blink. If you're willing to stretch that budget a couple bucks the Vendetta looks with the caenan and my dad has prettymuch stolen it because he enjoys that combo so much.

My favorite rod is the Berkley Cherrybark. I have 2 of them, one medium and another medium-heavy. The medium is my favorite rod.

Have a few of the Amps - $30 bucks. Last 2-3 years then swap out with a new one. Have used them to catch bass and reds.

Go on wish.com and buy some sweet reels from China. Even though you have to wait three weeks for them. They have some great reels for around $25
