Not brand loyal. Not against refurb. Only thing I "need" is a place to connect my shop vac. Would prefer 3 blades.

Ridgid, new models have a cutterhead lock which greatly reduces snipe, ( the gouge at the beginning and end of a board.

Any idea on model # for ridgid?

Sorry,i didnt see your question, R4331. I would buy another one without question if i ever need another one. I have had a couple different ones and sold them all and got the Ridgid.

I have a 13 in dewalt and have been very pleased. Had it for about 7-8 yrs now.
As wood guy said, I will have a little bit of snipe if I don't support the wood on the exit. I dont anything about the rigid but they make some really good stuff.

Small 12" planers usually can handle around 6" stock.
As for snipe, I have a large table for support, but find lifting up on the board helps even more.

Ill be looking for one around Christmas time. I try to buy second hand to save a few bucks, or rather get a good tool at a lower cost that may need a little work. I wont be using it enough to spend a ton of money on one.

Thanks guys. I like both the dw734 and the rigid 4331. I'll be using it on a benchtop without a large support table so I'll have to just deal with snipe (if any).
A friend bought that chip collector and likes it but was disappointed with the size. I've already put the components for the garbage can top cyclone into my Amazon shopping cart.
I'm planning on using this for cypress and pine mainly but may do some work in ash and maple. These routers should be able to handle that, right?

Like I said, lifting the end of the board on the in-feed and out-feed will eliminate snipe, once you get used to that sweet spot.
Hardwoods like ash will work, you may have to take less off each pass, though.

I looked at that grizzly but it doesn't have a dust port and only has 2 blades.

This is out of your range but either save your money and get it or look for it on craigslist.

It is a great little planer.
I have run a ton of bf through mine.
It has a power ejector so you technically can send the chips into a can without a dust collector but it throws dust everywhere.

What does that give me over the 734?

I think this is where i stand...

have the 734 and am very pleased with it. PurpLev did a good job of highlighting the differences. He is also right that both machines have received good reviews. I think it comes down to how often you’ll use the machine. I’m not a professional or even a serious amateur and I work wood when funds permit me to do so, so I couldn’t justify the higher cost. If I were one of these guys who uses their machine very regularly I would say the higher cost is easily justified. I think both thickness the wood well but the convenience of an automatic locking head and chip ejector would be nice.

I hear ya. But it's not a little more, it's over twice as much.
