There's a lake in my backyard that's stocked with some Bass, so I bought a fishing pole. Although, I'm not really sure I know exactly what I'm doing.

What's the best bait to use? Best time to go fishing? Any other tips?

go get you some spinner baits
easy to work (cast and retrieve) and generally attractive to fish
work the banks ahead of you and out ten feet or so

Live worms work best for us in our ponds. Our bass seem to bite better in the mornings. But, the cold weather has slowed our action way down.

I had no idea this was so well known . My uncle introduced me last summer and raved so hard about it. Said when you can't catch on anything else you can still catch on this. I thought he was just a genius, but now every time the topic comes up someone else brings this up. So I second this

Well, that explains a lot. I guess I bought a pole at the worst time of the season.

Good to know that lures seem to work just as well as live bait.

if you use a lizard or senko you will slaughter the bass in a stocked pond.

Watermelon red color, or black/purple if the water seems stained (usually won't be in a small pond). Throw it out from the bank and fish it by gently picking it up off the bottom and letting it fall as you slowly retrieve. If it suddenly feels like it doesn't want to come off the bottom, set the hook and enjoy.

I really like throwing the half baby bass half white color senko in the spring. I use it almost like a top water bait in more shallow grass areas and let it sink a little once in anything deeper than 3 feet or so.

Culprit Red Shad worm Carolina rigged. As you walk the bank cast ahead of yourself parallel to the bank about 12-48" out from the bank. If you don't catch anything that way hang it up. No bass in that pond.

Forget soft plastics sounds like you can barely cast, much less Texas rig and set the hook. Get some Strike King Red Eye Shad lipless crank sits and cast and wind. Buy chrome/blue and Red/orange. Fish late in afternoon if sunny fish chrome if cloudy throw the red. As it gets warmer fish will be shallow so parrellell cast 2/4 off bank Good Luck
