In the market for a good knife sharpener that doesn't require me taking the whole day off to sharpen my knives. I have a lansky but wanting to try something different.

Spyderco Sharpmaker. Only people who haven't used them will say otherwise.

Now if you need to reshape the blade, it isn't the best, but for sharpening, it most certainly is

+1 for the sharpmaker. Got mine off of eBay for $30. I made it a habit to touch up my Benchmade every Monday morning.

Work Sharp Ken Onion Edition is a pretty good step up from the basic model. Lot of accessories are in the works for it and uses pro grade abrasive belts.

Spyderco sharpmaker here also! Just don't drop one of the stones as they are expensive.

how much metal does that thing take off?

I like the 8in DMT bench stones

finish it off with one of these

ETA: i've used the warthogs and those gimmicky sharpeners but i can't get a blade anywhere near as sharp as I can with a few laps on a whetstone.

agree completely. I have a lansky as well and have never found a more effective sharpening system...but good lord, it is labor intensive. My knives actually stay pretty dull just because I don't want to deal with all of the ritual...
