Best ammo for a .35 Whelen?

Just bought a .35 Whelen and looking for the best bang for my buck. Any suggestions?
Store I bought it from recommended Hornady 200 gr SP
It's $35 though. Is that the going price for these particular shells?

they are pricey. What model .35 you buy? I ask because mine had a very hard time patterning with the Barnes 180 gr. ($45/box).

My dad likes Hornady Superformance.
It has a higher velocity than anything he can handload for it. They aren't cheap, but you won't be shooting it a lot anyway.

Thanks for the suggestions. The store I bought my gun from can overcharge for accessories and other items, and I was just making sure I wasn't getting overcharged. I'm very ignorant on this particular weapon, but heard people I trust swear by it.
ETA: my season doesn't start until Nov. 5th primitive weapon

I haven't got my 35 yet, but I was talking to buddy that does a lot of handloading, and he said he found those Hornady's to be the most accurate out of the box, and are even better when he reloads those bullets and tweaks on them a little.

I bought same thing last Friday in Realtree. Picked up Federal 225gr ammo. All they had so I will make it work. Can't wait to shoot it.

BARNES 180 GR TSX $41.00 BX.
iT IS GOING TO DEPEND WHAT YOUR GUNS LIKES. I have had to swap to the barnes 180 in a cva and h&r because they did not like the 200's

That's the same .35 I got. Looks awesome.
I'm gonna save up next year for a better scope. Getting a Bushnell put on it right now that I took off my .270
Got a Nikon Buckmaster on my rifle. gonna get a Camo Nikon pro staff put on the .35 next.

Federal blue box
Winchester Power point
Best for your dollar on the market IF YOUR GUN SHOOTS THEM WELL.
Any regular bonded soft point will probably do just fine out of that hammer of a caliber

Have they legalized the Whelen in LA?

Yes but some here will say that it is illegal on NWRs despite an email from the refuge manager stating they are legal.

Well which ones do the CVA apex like? Cause they do not like Barnes very much

Motorboat,
Which ammo a gun likes is pretty much a specific trait for that particular gun. Not all Apex guns are going to like the same brand of ammo, much less same bullet. I'd start w/ a box of the least expensive/most readily available ammo you can find. After shooting a few groups, the gun will tell you if that's the right ammo for it or not. If not, try a different brand of ammo or different bullet wt/type of bullet. Any 35 Whelen load that uses a bullet designed to hunt thin skinned game should have no problems putting down a deer. One of my early Contender barrels was a 35 Remington. In a 14" barrel, it runs 500-600 fps slower than the Whelen. Nevertheless, was 35 Remington very deadly on whitetail deer.
