Best 2nd Rifle Purchase

I just purchased my first rifle, a Ruger 10/22. I plan on going to the range with it for practice. What are yalls opinions on the next best rifle under $1,000 to purchase. The next one will be just for weekend shooting/home protection. I am thinking some form of .223 semi rifle. Any advice? I already have a Barretta Urika for duck hunting. I will be buying a pistol at some point also.

That what I figured. Any specific AR-15s? I saw a S&W M&P 15 for 639. How does that fare in the AR15 world?

if you want a bolt action in .223, I'd go with the CZ 527. They have great hunks of wood on em, set trigger, great sights. i'd get it in 7.62x39. ultimate louisiana brush gun
