I'm located just south of Birmingham and have a Bermuda lawn. New sod last July so it's never been treated. I started to get some broadleaf and annual bluegrass in it over the winter. Grass is still dormant now.

2 weeks ago I put out some 2,4d to knock out some of the weeds. It killed a bunch and wilted a bunch more. I have some more to possibly spray again.

I stopped by the local lawn place and asked what I should put out, they gave me a 0-0-7 pre-emergent. Is that what I should be putting down now? Just spray more of the 2,4d? Something else entirely?

You should have applied a pre emergent in mid February. Go online and order either barricade or dimension. Since you didn't I would go to a co op and buy msma. Msma and 24d are the only post emergent you'll need for bermuda grass. Msma will kill crabgrass and most grassy weeds and of course 24d for your broadleafs.

I'd go with what the locals recommend. Go ask them when you should put down some turf builder type product. A healthy lawn will choke a lot of weeds out on its own.

Mid February even in Birmingham? My grass is still completely dormant now.

You spray pre emergents before the weed seeds emerge from the ground. They basically coat the ground and when the weed breaks the surface they die. You spray in February for your summer weeds and early fall to take care of winter weeds.

Thanks for the info.

Am I going to hurt or help anything by putting it out this weekend?

Better late than never. I strongly recommend trying to get your hands on some msma. Do some research on it. It's by far the best post emergent herbicide for bermuda lawns.

Isn't that the one that will kill the grass too? So spot spray I'm guessing.

No it will not kill your bermuda. Now if you had centipede or st Aug it would kill it. It will cause slight yellowing to bermuda that only last about 5 days. It absolutely smokes crabgrass and most all grassy weeds.

The annual bluegrass you have will die when temps get up. I would wait until mid April and blanket spray your whole yard. Like I said your lawn will yellow for about a week but trust me it will come back. At that time hit it with a high nitrogen fertilizer I use 35-0-0, water it good and prepare to have a beautiful lawn. In the heat of summer make sure it's getting a minimum of 1 inch of water a week. You're welcome

I don't know how to post pics on here. If I could I would show you my yard and a few of my clients yards. Trust me if you follow those instructions your neighbors will be jealous and you'll have a lawn you're very proud of.

No problem. You can't get msma at Lowe's. Go to a co op and ask for it. Also don't buy your fertilizer at Lowe's either it costs twice as much because it says Scott's on it.

This is full strength surflan---a very good pre-emergence herbicide that gets crabgrass and some small seeded broadleaf. Not only it is good on bermuda grass, it is great in flower beds and such. It is packaged in Louisiana too and is guaranteed. I used it last year--great of crabgrass on any established grass even centipede and St. Augustine.

LINK

While it is best to put pre-emergent herbicides down when all grass seed is dormant and not trying to germinate it does the work of keep grass seed from germinating anytime you put it down. It will control crabgrass applied now unless you see green growing crabgrass already.

It will also keep bermuda grass from coming up in your flower beds from seed applied anytime.

MSMA is no longer available for turf applications.

MSMA is still labeled for golf courses, roadways, and home lawns. No more sports turf.

If you have pre emerge, I would do both...apply another does of 24D to kill what is already up and put out the pre-emerge to prevent seeds from sprouting....

It can be sold until existing inventories are gone.

The only labeled use now is cotton, golf courses, sod farms and highway right of ways. It is more than likely only cotton will be left after 2019.

You can read more here LINK

If you happen to like MSMA and know where a supply is you should buy it and hoard it.

I assure you residential use of MSMA is over once the supply of previously labeled (before 2013) is gone.

It is an arsenical product and would not be allowed on any turf now if the EPA hadn't backed up in 2013 and agreed to retest until 2019. Nobody expects it to last on anything but perhaps professional turf and cotton.

Any person spraying for hire MSMA outside the labeled uses is taking a very big risk.

I would not want to be found spraying landscapes with an arsenical product that was not labeled for that use.
