Last night about half hour before sunset, I'm driving south on 23 toward Venice. I'm 100 yards south of the refinery, maybe a bit more. A very large black animal with a distinctive tan nose gallops (does not run like a hog) across the highway from left to right (river side to bayou side).

This had to be a bear. I know hogs pretty well and have them on some property, and it didn't run like a hog, it had that awkward gallop a bit like a horse. It was too thick to be a cougar or cat, too low to be a horse.

Am I crazy? I had dinner at Thompsons and they thought it wasn't entirely unreasonable given the description.

They are migrating down from the I-49 corridor.

You're probably not crazy, or maybe just a little bit.
Bears are now numerous along the lower Vermilion river swamps and woods and even on large wooded levees in the marsh. Wouldn't surprise me at all if they were in your area. Several years ago one was captured in the city limits of Lafayette and relocated to the central part of the Atchafalaya Basin. Within 5 days, it had migrated all the way to the brackish marshes below Golden Meadow.

It's very unlikely in that area. Probably was a hog but who knows

It was a hog, every patch of woods from belle Chasse to Venice gets rabbit hunted with dogs 1000 times. No way in hell it was a bear. They were just being nice to you at Thompson’s so you didn’t feel dumb..

Cousin Shawn and the Maladas were dogging on you as soon as you left…

Yeah no doubt, I met white mike and enjoyed some of his stories. Good food too.

Grew up in that area and never heard of a bear sighting ever. Now there are some wild elk south of Alliance near the coal plant and lake hermitage road. Lots of hogs in the area also.

Actually was super dead on the porch. Seriously nice folks though, will be back for sure. Will try the seafood fries.

The chilicheese fries were GREAT.

These elk escape from Nungesser’s property after a storm?

Yes and somehow managed to survive in southeast Louisiana. Pretty amazing feat that hunters haven’t taken them out yet.

I think there was a story a few years ago where someone hit one while driving. That’ll wake you up.

They mix in with the moose population - makes them hard to see.

Lots of swamp elk in Plaquemines Parish. Nungesser had a bunch imported years ago and they all got out during Katrina.

There was a dead cow elk on the side of the highway about 20 miles from Venice on the last day of duck season. I had to turn around to confirm what I saw

Yeah… they get hit by cars every now and then.
I’m also amazed that no one hunts them because they aren’t regulated in Louisiana.
