Blew out inner seal on one of my trailer bearings, thinking of replacing both sides with new hub assemblies, due to age of boat trailer. What brands do y'all recommend to go with or stay away from? Thanks

I have the vortex hubs, they are supposed to last 5 years/100k. So far so good for me

He's asking why you wouldn't just replace the inner seal.

The hub itself and the races are pretty durable. If you haven't had any issues there's no reason you can't just inspect and repack them, unless you're just itching to change them.

Dad gave me the rig, it basically got used three or 4 times a year at most, 17 years old. He never did any maintenance on it, water pump is only thing that ever hot replaced on boat. I just took it on a trip to Toledo Bend, roughly 600 miles. When I got back to house, one of trailer lights had water in in, side bunk was falling off- galvanized lag bolts were corroded down to nothing. I figured I could pull the hub assembly off, replace seal and repack bearing, but don't know what I might find once I get in there.

I overhauled a small trailer last spring so I know the feeling of wanting to just rip it apart and make it right, but if you towed it that far with no issues then the hubs are probably in good shape. Nothing wrong with replacing the whole assembly for peace of mind but in all likelyhood you'd be fine just rebuilding with new seals and bearings.

A word of advice, do not throw anything away until you have the new part in your hand and know it fits. Trailer manufactures seemed to have just made shite up as they went along when it comes to sizing. U-bolts, tie plates, castle nuts... all these things will seem easy to get until you realize yours will only accept a certain size and it's only sold by some weird website in Milwaukee that takes 6 weeks to ship.

Thanks Tigah, you are probably right. And I won't be making that trip very often.

I just know the other stuff you're gonna be replacing is gonna add up quick. I did the bunks, hardware, bolts, hubs, winch, lights, tires, sanded and repainted mine and after all that I was in it for 3/4s of a new trailer. No need to drop 150 on new hubs if you can get away with a rebuild and put that money elsewhere.

I keep an extra hub WITH packed bearings with me at all times while trailering boat. Not expensive. I think the hub bearings and races were under 30 bucks. I remember telling the guy, at that price, I may never repack another one.

Exactly. I messed around with trying to get the races out all day one Saturday. Then I found out for $10 more than the bearings I could buy the whole hub assembly

I said never again will I frick with this!

have you ever looked into the oil bath hubs instead of grease? it uses your existing hub and bearings and you just change the rear seals and center caps and refill with regular rear end gear lube and is 1000 times better then grease because it never wears out and always stays on the bearings unlike grease that has a short mileage life and always tries to squeeze out.

I had them on a few trailers and loved them, never had a single issue with them and you never need to do bearing maint (regrease bearings) again

check them out LINK

Son and just replaced seals and bearings in a hub bath assembly. Parts were less than $20 with the new oil, cleaned everything out, and all went well.

Well I learned from a bad experience too but mine was yrs ago, in HS. Talk about difficult to know which bearings you need if you wait until they're spent to shite.

Wasn't my boat, a friend's. ruined our trip though. Took us til moon, going back and forth to some place in Welsh to get fitted.
