Caught a handful of 10-14" bass yesterday. All from the same pond. Cleaning them one had some coloration to it that kinda made me think of a goggleye. Was still 100% bass though. Cleaned it and the meat was def a different color. Anyone ever experience this? Or an idea what causes it?

I've always thought it was because of the water the were hanging in. It will be interesting to hear what everyone has to say.

I've caught catfish and sacalait with yellow meat before. Always tastes fine.

I've heard they can get that color if they eat a lot of crawfish.

This was kinda what I was thinking but out of the 10 bass I cleaned all from the same pond it was the only one. Wouldn't make sense that one fish is gorging on crawfish while the others aren't.

Maybe the orange tinted meat is indicative of an immature fish, 'cuz those are tiny! :)

Seems like most of the marsh bass I catch have meat that color. Still eat em.

I've noticed the majority of marsh bass I've caught in black water have a golden tint on the outside and that color meat on the inside. I'm thinking it may have something to do with their body producing a pigment to get their outside a dark black and gold look so they can blend in with their surroundings. No facts. Just my opinion.

I had a bunch of them in the 10-12 inch range and the rest were white.

Based on my personal experience and the comments above, I would venture to guess that the coloration cones from either the more vegetation and detritus filled shallow water or the insect and terrestrial rich diet located in those locations. Larger bass become more pelagic with age and feed heavier on bait fish in open cleaner water compared to when they are young.

Depends on their diet and the water color they hang out in. Will be the same for perch, sac au lait, etc..
