Basic scope recommendations for a 10/22 (BSA Merit badge related)

Thread title basically says it all. The kid started scouting a few months ago. They're going to the range the week after Thanksgiving to work on their rifle shooting merit badge.
As for the actually shooting requirements, here's what they are...
For a group of 11/12/13 year old's that have never fired a .22, how hard would shooting these groups be? A bunch of scouts got this badge at summer camp, but they were mostly older and they all spent a fair amount of time at the range over the course of the week.
In order to shorten the learning curve for them, I've thought of buying a scope for the 10/22 that we have. Any suggestions? Budget $50-$100.
Anyway, that's about it. Any and all recommendations are appreciated.

I have a Vortex Crossfire II (2-7 x 32) rimfire scope which works great. On Amazon they are 129 bucks - you can probably find them cheaper.

I threw a cheapo Wally World Simmons 4 power on mine.
It will eat the center of the bullseye out at 50 yards.

Eagle Scout here biting my tongue hard to not say anything political about BSA on the OB...
Any cheap, low-powered scope with a recognizable name should be fine if just plinking/target shooting.

I hear where you're coming from, loud and clear (It's also why my wife made me sign up as one of the scoutmasters.). But I will say, so far, it's been good for my kid so far. He started back in late-Feb - Early March and he's going for his 1st Class board of review next week.

Recently bought a Barska 3x9 x 32 to use around the house on a Savage .22, it works great, it’s clear and adjust well. I’ve only shot about 40 rounds through it so far but I’m happy with it.
It came with mounting rings and a cover for $43 from Wal Mart.

Seems like having a scope that focuses well at 50' would be the main factor.

Leave it with open sights. The more accommodations you make the less skilled they'll be. Part of the reward is overcoming the challenge.

Sounds good. Still might get one anyway, just to have it. Truth be told it's technically my wife's gun. I got it for her for valentines several years ago...

Most of the ones working on the badge have never fired one before. Worst case scenario, they have fun in this meeting and work on the badge at this summers camp. It's not always about the badges....

I shot the Appleseed class with open sights just to learn more about them. I have a web sling and tech sights on a marlin model 795. It’s a really simple gun to learn about sling supporting, open sights, etc. I might lean that way if it’s just for learning marksmanship.

Eagle Scout here. I got my rifle shooting merit badge at Camp Avondale in Clinton, LA. I was maybe thirteen.
We used iron sights only. I think it helps teach the fundamentals of sight alignment and sight picture. Which transfers over to any gun they might eventually handle.
It’s not hard to shoot those groupings with a .22 from that distance. I think I qualified they first day. You just want to give them plenty of opportunities to shoot and evaluate their targets.

Just looked at my sons 10/22. It has a Leupold 2-7x rim fire scope on it. It does well.

No reason to shoot iron sites. Just teaches a skill that they’ll never use.

In the bigger picture it's about marksmanship. A marksman can shoot well with and without a scope.

I will never have another rimfire scope without adjustable objective ever again.
