Popped off an $8 lure on Bluemoons boat a couple months ago.
My 50lb braid popped like it was nothing.

Curado 200e7 and 30lb braid is all I ever use and have never had a problem. I tie directly to braid.

If you going to throw a gold spoon over grass beds use the reel you have with the fastest retrieve. You really should be burning arse pulling that thing over the grass.

I learned that from an old coonass in a flatboat with folded down Air Bourdreauxs and a flannel shirt at the dock. Me and buddy came back with 2 reds, him and his buddy had 10. We asked him what he caught them on? He said a gold spoon, we were like that's what we were throwing! He said, "yeah but let me tell ya, when you pull that thing back ya got to burn arse with it, yall go back out and try dat". So we went back out, "burned arse with it" and caught our limit.

Why not?

It's obviously water-quality dependant and in ultra clear water I have used leaders, but most of the time in south LA I've never felt the need for one unless throwing a topwater, and only then because braid tangles on topwater trebble hooks like crazy.

I could see the argument for it if you were throwing artificials and working them slow, but even then I've had 0 issues catching when tying direct to braid. Popping corks I use a mono or fluoro leader under the cork FWIW.

For a number of reasons. First and foremost, spooky redfish in clear water are not going to eat a bait with braid tied directly to it. Secondly, there are very few knots that reliably do not slip when tying braid straight to a hook eye. Depending on how hard you set your hooks, you will break fish off with no leader. Braid also does not have nearly the ability to withstand abrasion as mono or fluoro, so if you're deepwater jigging rocks or structure, you're pretty likely to lose fish.

I'm sure plenty people catch fish by tying braid straight to a jighead, but it's bad practice. Too many reasons to use a leader. A double uni takes 20 seconds to tie.

redfish are idiots. you throw just about anything in front their face and they will gobble it up.

not really. Some days they do, some days they don't.

To the OP, I've never had an issue losing specks or reds with braid tight straight to the hook or lure. Obviously if you're gonna be fishing over oyster beds, just tie on a leader to have more abrasion resistance, but even then it's not really a must have. The only lure I lost this year on braid was when my reel backlashed and the abrupt stop in my cast popped my line and my topwater went flying. Some stretch would have likely prevented that.

That's just inaccurate.

eta: I'm really not interested in debating anyone on an internet message board about whether or not I'm qualified to say what is good/bad practice for redfishing . Do whatever you want, but tying braid straight to a hook eyelet is bad practice.

If you do tie braid straight to a hook, you'll have the most strength retention with a palomar knot.

If I know a pond is clear and loaded with fish, I'd much rather catch them out of a boat to be honest.

I was just curious. I've tied a uni straight to the jig without ever having an issue but I do loop it through twice before I tie it off. I'm not a bassmaster hook setter so I've never had an issue with breaking off. I use to always use a mono leader but I've had countless people tell me it's not nessesary and they won me over.

You may not be in a position such that it makes a difference, which is fine. I just generally try to eliminate as many variables as possible. That way, on the days when they don't eat, it's just because they're not eating.

i agree. I may be a little bias b/c this past year, at least for myself and my buddy i go sight fishing for reds with, we've caught our 10 reds in no time just about every single time we go. braid tied directly to a gold spoon. Throw it right past them and reel fast right in front their face and they hit it almost every single time. Out of the 10 or so times we went, i could count on one hand how many times we put a gold spoon in front their face and they did not bite.
