Hands down superior to Whitetail. I hunt West Texas Ranch every December. Usually bring home a few big Axis does. Agree with previous comments if Red Deer (Heinz ) > Elk > Axis but all of the above is way better than Whitetail. Enjoy the hunt.

I am going to hunt them in a few weeks. I was going to use a 115 grain(which I use for whitetails in MS) with my 270.
Y'all are starting to make me reconsider to a 130gr.

I got invited on a hunt this August. Had to google one to see what it looked like. I sat on an old pecan cracker in the middle of a field and a guy went dump corn out 150 yards away.

Before his truck was out of sight, 20-30 of them were eating from the scattered corn. Waited about an hour before a few bucks came out and I put a 7mm round to ones neck and dropped it. The axis and white tails all scattered but some of the hogs and turkey stayed around. Pi-yowed a hog too. This was not in a high fence.

30-06 with 150 grain brings them down like a cheap date. Most shots on the ranch we hunt 150-200 yards. Never any concerns, never had one run beyond 30 yards.

I've shot at least a dozen over the years, all with a .270. Meat is fantastic, and I tanned all the hides. Beautiful hides and they don't shed like whitetail. I had two of my grandmothers chairs covered with the hides, they came out great.
