Are hogs dangerous to someone walking around?

Yesterday I went to NE Texas to our family place to ride my horse. I'm down in the woods in the bottoms and I see our neighbor working on his fence. He's carrying an AR-15 (I think) over his shoulder. I joked about him having the gun and he said that he carried it in case the hogs got after him. He seemed serious. I've seen some out riding, but they always run away. I sometimes have to dismount to get a gate and my dogs go with me when I ride - do I really have to worry about hogs getting after us?

If you startle them, they can turn on you. Very slim chance but it can happen. When we started seeing hogs on our property, we started carrying handguns at all times.

Better to kill them with prejudice than take a chance.

The lady I bought him from used to shoot off him - he's very quiet and would stand still if you shot off him. He's a 17 1 TB-Percheron cross.

I saw him as a puppy.

I also saw my granddaddy get his leg opened up from calf to thigh from a wood hog, we had to carry him out leading a mule. I had no idea a man could bleed that much and still live. kill hogs & eat em, the end.

My dad has had some hog hunters come out and they had some success, but the hogs keep coming back.

There seems to be an endless supply.

frick yea, I was charged by one when I was little.

I've had several grunt and stomp at me when little ones were around. They don't give a frick if they are threatened.

I'm not a good pistol shot and we're going to clean up a trail in the woods tomorrow - would a .12 ga. with buckshot stop a hog or do you need a rifle?

I'll be waiting on I-20, pick me up. I think I have a few AR's left that didn't go down in one of my many boating accidents.
