Looking for a good reel under $85 or $90. I've narrowed it down to the Abu Garcia Pro Max and the Ardent Apex Pro. I've had my hands on the Garcia and it was very smooth, but have not handled the Ardent Apex nor any other of their reels for that matter, but I've read good things about them.

Which would all of you recommend?

Daiwa Aird - $60

That's what I would get. Cheapest Abu I would mess with is the Orra series.

ETA: actually this is my recommendation: Abu Garcia Orra SX - $85. Free shipping and no tax. Fits your budget and definitely better than the 2 in your OP.

Ardent reels are junk. 2 different people I know have had issues with them and customer service. One is a "pro staffer" and bought like 6 to 9 reels and has already sent 2 back for repair and broke another this past weekend setting the hook. Other guy is a buddy that bought one and has had it repaired once and second time sent it back. Because it wasn't initally repaired by an Ardent approved shop or tech they will not warranty or fix it. To boot there are no shops are techs within 100's of miles that are certified.

At that price point I would do Academy's Mettle reel. It's $60 and super smooth. Also, keep checking Bass Pro, they often run sales on Pro Qualifiers for $75 (reg $99).

Thanks for all the advice, I ended up getting a Orra2 SX. Hopefully it will be here by the weekend so I can use it.

I found a deal on an Ardent Magnum but shied away b/c of the previous post describing some troubles with the brand.
