If a round isn't chambering, that's a clue that you have a problem that you probably shouldn't try to be "solve" by forcing the round into the chamber

...is actually pretty good advice.

I don't know one firearm instructor that thinks the FA is useless but okay. Whatever this guy says is true.

My thing is that you might never need it but it is better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Not to mention that you can buy an Ar-15 with the FA and dust jacket for nearly the same price as without.

One might be able to make a rational argument in favor of the dust cover, although that's an esoteric feature (unless you're planning to live in the desert or on the beach).

The thing that kills most rifles of all make and model is dirt and grime. Dirt and grime was the reason these rifles failed in their first generations. Dirt and grime cause extra friction which wears parts faster. The forward assist was added because of dirt and grime impeding the functioning of the bolt carrier group. The fact that the Army teaches, in the event of a misfire, Stop, Pull, Observe, Release, Tap(the foreward assist), Squeeze proves the necessity of it.

But dont use it and when your rifle ceases maybe you can bang it on the ground or something.

Forward Assist was added to assist with "silent" chambering. The corrective action for misfires due to dirt and grime impeding the BCG is to clean the rifle. Shouldn't happen in the first place, with a well maintained rifle.

I mean we are talking about a rifle for the range and the occasional hog hunt people. Why we getting into all this Army shite? Of course the environments are a bit more dynamic.

All have stated that the Forward Jammer (assist) is a BAD IDEA!

Surprisingly, some folks are of the opinion that if your life depends on it, you would be better off ejecting a shell that won't load vs. forcing it into the chamber, possibly jamming the weapon badly.

p.s. If you don't know who those guys are ... Google them.

I don't doubt that there are people who want//need FA's for "silent chambering" or for a chamber check. Not sure why//when they need to "silent chamber" a round, and not sure why an FA is needed for a chamber check, but if they want//need to, there are certainly FA's available on plenty of AR's.

But using the FA simply because a round won't seat in the chamber is often a dangerous undertaking.

While they might not think it is "useless", Ive never taken a class or had any training what so ever outside of the military that even mentioned or advocated the use of the forward assist. The military is the only place Ive seen it taught or used.

That being said, my gun has it. I dont think Ive ever used it. If I were buying a rifle for a range toy, it would not even be something I thought about when discussing pros/cons for purchasing.

You can get a Wyndham at academy for $799.

I love mine but then again I don't need the best. If it goes bang then I hit what I'm aiming at.

Go with the S&W...because you can change/mod out the upper later to something that may suit you better.
