My browning bps came has a 28" barrel for hunting and an 18.5" barrel for hd. It spends most of the year under my side of the bed wearing the short barrel.

Is this English?

I have mine set up on the balcony pointed at the sky set to go off when movement is detected. I've been robbed 3 times with this setup. Joe needs to have a press conference telling me what I'm doing wrong.

Yea I've done the same thing and failed. I thought Joe Biden was a self defense expert?

But to address the OP, I have an 870 with an 18" barrel and a fixed stock. Wielding a long arse barrel puts more weight up front and is hard to maneuver around corners. The 18" makes it easy as hell.

If you have an 870 with a 4 round mag tube, you can get an 18" barrel for it for a HD setup.

how difficult is it to change out the barrels? can you do the semi aumatic like that or it has to be the pump?

Changing a barrel on a regular 870 takes about 30 seconds. You just unscrew the cap on the mag tube and pull the slide back slightly and off she comes.

The semi autos are a bit different since they have gas tubes to drive the piston (at least Remington's do. Inertia-driven shotguns may be diff). If you put an 870 barrel on an 1100, it either wouldn't fit or wouldn't function.

that's pretty cool. see i dont' have a shotgun and I'd also like to have a hd shotgun so that may be a pretty good way to take down both.

eta: i'm kind of shotgun dumb, not overly familiar with them as opposed to my limited pistol/rifle knowledge.

Remington semi autos take about 10 seconds longer to swap barrels than 870's.

Both can be done very quickly and easily.

That was my line of thinking when I got mine. My dad has a 26" and 22" barrel for his 870, one for birds and the latter for turkey. I got the 18" version for HD and swap out the 26" when I go hunt.

The one thing you have to make sure of is what length magazine tube the barrel is designed for. The loop on the barrel that connects to the shotgun will be too far away if you get an 18" barrel for a 6 round magazine tube. Make sure you buy one that fits a 4 round tube so you have the ability to swap them.

Oh and remove the plug when you have it loaded with your favorite buckshot for HD.

It's insanely easy. Unscrew the end cap off the mag tube.

That's it.

Mossberg makes a beaded 18" 'Security Barrel' for the 870 for about $100. I picked up one last year with a +2 mag extender.

The only trick was grinding off the detents on the inside of the stock mag tube. Those are the little dents that hold the spring and follower in the mag when you take off the end cap.

The 'tab' hanging down is the loop that fits around the mag behind the end cap.

So I still have my 22" bbl, and it only takes 1 minute to change the barrel and insert the plug and you're ready to go.

You could, but I like having the option of putting the 22" back on.
