I got one a while back (Savage Model 111) because I have several rifles in smaller calibers already. I took my first deer with it over the weekend and it wasn't as bad as i thought. I figured it would have done a lot more damage. I shot a doe at about 70 yards with 180 grain winchester soft point ammo and it made a good thru and thru pass without tearing a bunch of meat up.

Anyone else use one? If so, what grain ammo do you shoot?

I use a .300wsm and use 150 grain Barnes TTSX. Within 100 yards, if I don't shoot bone, it goes through and through.

I always heard that a lower grain with a .300wsm with break up on impact and create a mess. A buddy of mine was giving me a hard time about it being too much rifle. But to be honest i would rather too much than not enough. Also, you get a much better blood trail with through and through.

I have a 300 WM. I don't use it for deer hunting but where I hunt we don't have far shots. I would use it if I had to make a far shot but I just use my 270. If it's all you have use it just make sure to make a good shot placement or you could ruin a lot of meat.

I shoot a 300 wsm. Was shooting the fusion 150s but recently switch to the 165s. The 150s wouldn't exit between 60-150yards. Just exploded inside. Great results but made me nervous. 165s are perfect for me.

I shoot a 300 WSM 165gr and have shot several deer. I don't find it tears up deer anymore than any other 30 caliber. I hunt a pipeline and have dropped bucks at 300+ yards. That is why I shoot the 300 is to give me the larger grain bullet and not lose energy/speed.

I'll have to shoot some 165s. I was pretty impressed with the 180s and have read plenty of reviews that the 180s do great.

i've used one before w/o any trouble. blew through a 210# 7 pt at just under 200 yds. deer wobbled off 10 yds and dropped.
one of my relatives hunts with a 300 weatherby mag without any problems.

I bit off more than I could chew when I first got the 300WSM. Ammo was more expensive than I was ready for with the intention of shooting more then just hunting season. I tried the 180gr Ferderals in 3 flavors not including the fusions. I could not get them to group better than 2" at 100 yards. I tried the fusion 150s (all they had on the shelf) and my groups went to 1.25" so I found it's favorite round without spending a butt load of money. Then I changed the stock and trigger which shrunk my groups to .6" averages. I plan on trying the Hornadys when they come out this spring. I really hope that my gun likes the 165gr GMX Superformance, because then I will be set!

TL:DR, my gun did not like the federal 180s at all. 150s expand too fast at close to moderate ranges. 165s are beautiful!

I shoot a 300 WM. Use 165grn Barnes TTSX. Used to shoot 150grn Federal Trophy Bonded Bear Claw until they quit making them a few years ago. Never had an issue.

I have an uncle and cousin that both shoot 300 Win Mags. Not sure what ammo they use, but they've combined to kill hundreds of deer with them. Both shoot Browning BARs and have been since the 1980's.
