Small things that you were certain were the secret to survival, and outdoor dominance when you were 12 y/o or younger?

ex.

The Rambo survival knife.
folding saw
compass

other suggestions?

Absolutely, even if they were actually the crappiest knife ever made.

I liked surplus Army stuff. A kid could find all kinds of cool stuff for the clubhouse, playing Army, etc...

Wouldn't cut butter if you heated it. And the water proof matches that came in the handle weren't't water proof. I know cause I dipped them in water then tried to light them. Still loved that thing though...

Swiss Army/multitool knifes. The more gadgets/crap on them the more prepared you where. If it had a toothpick odds are you'd never have to leave the woods again.

A guy in my neighborhood had that rifle. He would wait until the Benjamin guys had their limit of robins/grackles/woodpeckers/cardinals, then ask to borrow one of the Benjamines.

Yep, my wife and I had this discussion the other night about my 11 year old. She thinks he's looking at porn on his ipad because he's been deleting his history. I told her when we were kids, all we had to look at was a stack of playboys stashed out in the woods that all the neighborhood boys knew where they were at.

Is that a Crossman 760? That's what I had.

I had to steel mine at a construction site behind the neighborhood where we stole clubhouse wood. When my dad found them, I said they weren't mine and whoever built our house must have left them there. I never realized the issue date was right on the cover til that moment....

The kind with the bead and wire for darts? Those were amazing. OTOH, I had fun using the tubing from a bike banana seat and making darts out of large stick pins. Glued cotton to the ball end.

Surgical tubing! We didn't need no stinking surgical tubing. We had the old rubber band slings. After about a hundred shots they would snap.
