Thinking about planting one in the yard. I had one in pot in Conroe TX but it didn't survive the move.
This is the bay leaf tree used in may dishes.

I knew of a couple grown in Shreveport when I lived there. It is rated for hardiness zones 8-11 so you should be fine where you're at. I would just be watchful of it if temps get into the teens for an extended period.

Growing a lot slower than I thought it would

WE had one in our B.R. home and it was great. Very tolerant of what ever the weather threw at it. Grew like crazy and we used the leaves in cooking quite a bit. The one we have currently is planted in a pot and is doing ok but not as good as the other.
Go for it, you should do fine.

They are slow growing and are usually maintained as a topiary or a small shrub but can reach 60' if conditions are right according to the web.
