I recently "re-acquired" some land in the basin (around 2000 acres). It had been leased by my family for many years, but the leasee decided not to renew the lease this year. It appears to have plenty of hardwoods and a couple of "bayou's" according to google maps. Anyways, just wondering if there are decent deer numbers in the basin or if it is commonplace to hunt deer in the basin and not just duck. Thanks in advance.

North side or south side? Water access only?

Water access only from bayou sorrell channel. It is at the point where the bayou sorrell channel T's off at the main basin channel.

pros: probably loaded with all types of wildlife including bear, hogs, deer, alligators, secluded with minimal foot traffic , and away from people

cons: water access only, may be limited hunting due to high water levels, if you're not out there it wouldn't surprise me if the land has trespassers and poachers

sounds like a hunters paradise

Probably due to the high water. If you don't lease it or use it someone else will...

Hoping to get down there and survey the land in the next month or so. Hopefully, it turns out to be a gold mine of wildlife. My uncle said the water is pretty high right now, so that might dictate when my brother and I go. Well, that and my mom having heart surgery next week, of course.

Will you be leasing out spots to hunt?

Most people who frequent the spillway seem to believe that it is "state land" from levee to levee

The basin is full of trash/tresspassers. We lease 2000 acres. Last weekend we ran off 3 people hunting it. They said they thought it was state land.

Also had a group of dog hunters (dog season closed) come to our bank to turn loose. When they saw us, they went across the river and turned loose there.

Make sure you gate off all those bayous. Gotta keep the fish out.
