I am curious.

I don't see the real advantage of that engine. It cost more than the semi and has a lot less horsepower. The fuel economy difference is not worth the extra money.

I have friend considering one.

Ram diesel? 3.0 or 6.7? If 3.0, less hp but a hella more TQ. You know, what's important in trucks. Numbers have been broken down here before. Payoff on the diesel is much sooner than most imagine.

I've got a few of them for work trucks. Hate them. Invariably they will end up shutting you down where you're barely creeping back to the shop. That DEF crap is wonderful for taking the stink out of diesel exhaust but these new engines are notorious for running you out of coolant through that system and you don't know it till it's too late because it's all going out the pipe and there's no obvious leak.

Takes a brave man to buy a first year motor!

cost of engine, cost of fuel, cost of maintenance--I just don't see it.

One guy that works with us using his dodge for mostly road miles and claims he gets 23 mpg out of his hemi. The diesel is only claiming 28

I am Ford and Toyota man but those Dodges are a pretty good bit cheaper. I can't get over the quality reputation of Dodge being so bad. Fiat has a poor reputation worldwide.

Just looking for real life stories to tell the guy.

Can't have shutdowns. That alone is enough to not buy one. Just think how reliable gas engines are now. I can't remember the last time a vehicle let me down on the road. I run em to at least 200K miles too.

I honestly think that the government purposely tried to destruct diesels by all of their new standards. I mean, every company that runs any kind of diesel has had major problems with catastrophic engine failures

I've had one since November. No problems so far with 12000 miles. I love it. All I pull is my boat and it's plenty big enough for that. I bought it for the longevity of a Diesel engine. Had a 2011 ram with the hemi that I kept for my son. I sit in I12 traffic two ways every day and am averaging 24 mpg. On the way to and from the camp I'm getting around 29.

Unless you're towing a lot (daily) or putting very high miles on a vehicle, it's hard to get a diesel to pay off. With fuel prices where they are now it's very hard.

I personally don't think it's a bad thing. SCR is pretty great.

You wouldn't like it because a lot of film crews and film food trucks use them. And they would not have been purchased in the first place if it weren't for those film credits.

Some use engine coolant through a grid in the DEF tank to keep it warm. If the cooler ruptured you would be injecting all of your coolant through the exhaust.

The big problem is the amount of time that they had to transition throughout the tiers. Manufacturers had to redevelop new engines, and were basically testing new concepts as they go. A 5-7 year span would've been ideal.

We can see this because most of the tier 2 and 3 engines were garbage across every industry, and they are the ones requiring the biggest emissions reductions in the shortest amount of time. Tier 2 was a big reduction, and tier 3 was basically a test mule to get to tier 4

As far as over the road trucks go we had terrible problems with the old EGR motors Cummins made. We are not having much trouble with the DEF engines from anyone. My impression was they took a bunch of junk off the motor as far as pollution goes when they went to DEF into the exhaust.

Tier 4 is what you want. Tier 2 motors were really bad and tier 3's weren't great but they didn't have to be because they weren't going to be around long anyway.

You want SCR.
