I met him at the sportsmans show and my buddy and I each have labs we're considering sending off for training. Anyone use him or know him? I enjoyed talking with him and am leaning towards sending my dog to him, but there's so many trainers out there these days. Another name I've been recommended a lot is boo-yah, but I haven't spoken with them.

Boo yah is really good. I have several friends who have sent their dog there and they’re all great.

Eric Chauvin out of Lake Charles is also very highly regarded.

Another rec for boo yah. My cousin's dog was trained there and he's top notch.

Bump for the late crew. Cory's kennel name is old cypress kennels I believe. He's in Kaplan. I spoke with Buyah earlier, he was working a dog so couldn't talk a lot, but obviously takes pride in his work. He's quite a bit more expensive.

Best I know is Brian Johnson, owner of duckdogtrainer.com

He's in Winnie, TX. Trains and boards a lot of high profile clients as well. Worth a call.

Boo yah did good work for two guys I know. In summer, he takes them up to Michigan for a few months to train without so much heat.

I’d also look at Chuck McCall.

I had one trained by JD at Bu yah last year and I'm getting ready to send him another one. I've known his family for a long time and I can't say enough good things about his program and his results. He stays busy and booked up though as that's the only downside to it.

Don't know Cory, so no opinion.

Would second Bu Yah and also recommend looking at Southern Tide Kennels near Slidell.

you usually get what you pay for... not to say there aren't great trainers for cheap, or crap trainers that cost a lot.

I agree on you get what you pay for, but most trainers are fairly competitive on prices. Most I talk to are $500 range. JD is $750, but the fact he stays booked up even being more expensive speaks wonders to his reputation.

Cory also runs duck hunts on pecan island west hunting club. Not sure if anyone knows him or has hunted with him.

Another recommendation for Bu Yah, JD did a great job with the lab I sent to him.

Didn't realize JD was $750 now. Must be really busy. Also, 'competitive pricing' is relative

You can definitely save if its a strict duck dog and you have no hunt test/FT aspirations. Just find the right guy. Horror stories are a dime a dozen in the retriever world. I personally feel an established HT/FT trainer is more likely to have a solid obedience/training program and experience working with all kinds of dog personalities. Also travelling north to train is huge in terms of progression if you're sending your dog June-September.

Go visit kennels, watch dogs work, their attitude, and find recommendations.

I'm going meet with JD next week. I met Cory and spoke with him, he does hunt test, but doesn't mess with field trials I don't think. Hopefully JD can make a spot for the summer training program for me.

Give Ricky a call at Southern Tide. Used to train bomb sniffing labs for the marine corps (as a civilian). Might be less expensive but still good quality... also find out what all is included in the price for all trainers. Could be add ons for birds, heartworm/flea, and other things. Summer trip is usually a flat extra payment ($300-500).

JD requires the 6 month heart worm preventative. Cory is $500 which includes ducks, feeding, and intestinal worming, but also requires you to handle heart worming.

There's just so many trainers out there these days. The chocolate lab my buddy got is out of a dog trainer from Houma Rodrique K9's and he's another trainer I've heard good things about.

I'm just going to meet with them in person and try and go from there.

I have no experience in the field trial world, as far as labs go, but I seen on Cory's website he trained under Dudley Duhon. Anyone know much about him?

DD was a sadistic trainer that ruined more dogs than he ever actually trained. If a trainer has to pimp at sportsman shows his craft is lacking. Use someone who goes north for the summer if they are full time and carry over 10 dogs. Run from any who stay south with 10 or more. Visit training session on Multiple occasions paying particular attention to the water they have to train on. There is very little water along I-10 from laffy to Beaumont to train on without teeth. Hard to build a dog without Qualtiy water to train on.
My list; Mark Smith (southlake kennels), Ed Thibodeaux(satin belle), chuck McCall(chumac Kennel’s), Ricky Elston(southern tide) & me if I was still training.
Don’t know Babb but from what I have seen on finishes, he would be on the list also. They’re plenty of charlatan dog trainers out there waiting to seperate the sheep from their wool, choose wisely.

Chuck is a great guy and trainer. Super nice dude. He used to let me use his fields and tech pond when I lived in BR because I didn't have anywhere else good to train my dog, and he hardly knew me at all.

Awesome info and thanks for the post. Any chance I could pursuade you back into the training world?

Great point about going North to train and gators being around down here in the South. I'll look into some of the other names you mentioned. I'll be meeting JD next week after the overwhelming amount of recommendations.
