I would not attach much structure underneath the camp. Not just for wind, but tidal surge. If you do build anything, make sure it breaks away from the pilings easily

Very good point. The surge wreaks havoc on the downstairs of our camp.

My buddy has a camp in cocodrie and the absolute worse thing is cleaning out the storage room after a storm. Cleaning out that marsh mud in 90 deg temps is horrendous.

See if you can find out how high the surge was for that area during Katrina, Rita, Isaac, Ivan and base it off that.

Storm surge in Venice for Katrina was like 12-13ft at my parents business warehouse. In empire/Buras surge was higher but they have less marsh to buffer from storms.

It will take category 3 or greater to flood Venice. Venice has only flooded once which was Katrina. Buras/Empire only flooded in Camille and Katrina I think. Just making the point that it's not a common occurrence.

Yeah that is what I have found too from as reliable sources as I can find. 16' seems to be high enough to get boats with T tops and radars in and keep out of flooding.

We will be across from the Fil a Sac a pretty high area. I think more than likely winds will be our biggest enemy. Of course my camp in Empire we lost the slab being within 200 feet from the levee breech. Of course going on camp #3 I am sure a storm will take it this year since we are finally building what we want....

hip roof?

Edited never mind, looked it up and I call it something different. Check on that in the design already.

My uncle and cousin live right there. They have cattle. He also runs airboats down there.

Sounds like you will have a nice camp. I'm a few years away from building ours unfortunately.

In regards to number 2, just doing some quick math in bed the forces on the bottom enclosure trying to bend the piles will be about 60% of the forces at the camp level. To me that is significant and cannot be overlooked when considering lateral bracing.

And no felt, use a synthetic underlayment under the metal or shingles roofing system...

Jason L,

Your cousin Jimmy and Mr. Earl? I have known them as most everyone else has for a while. The camp owners across from them are all great friends of mine so we really like the location, always have.

Yea. Earl is my uncle and Jimmy and Matt are my cousins. I'm the same age as Matt. Me and Matt hunted together (and Jimmy sometimes) a ton when we were younger.

It is a good area.
