I'm thinking about training one of labs. Any tips? When's the best time to start looking?

I've talked to a guy about this. He said he trained his dog to track wounded deer first, and eventually moved his way to training him to find the horns as well.

Yep, my GSP loves to do it. I really didn't have to train him much. I let him chew on cull buck sheds as a pup and he just knew what to do after that. Also, I praised him when he would find them. A lab will do the same. My mother-in-law has her Doberman finding sheds too.

How are you people finding sheds. I have foudn one in my life and it was still wet at the base and had been dropped that night. My dad had walked the same trail the day before.

Other than that, I have had a dog bring up one more. Seems like the other wildlife always gets to them first.

This is my dogs dad on one day of looking for sheds. He already blood trails deer. He's four years old.

keep the cameras and corn out after the season and check them every few days to see when the bucks antlers are coming off, then go out looking when they do.

Get a sheet of cattle fence.
Cut it into 3 equal sections.
Put up the sections near known deer trail with t-post.
Put a pile of rice bran, corn or soy beans next to the fence section.
When bucks come to eat the corn they hit their antlers on the fence and fall off.

I never did it but I seen some guys in Maine do it on TV.

A friend has a trough feeder with a roof on it and checks it daily at the end of the season. They hit the roof and knock them off and he has a big pile in the corner at the camp.

Buy you the Dog Bone kit, I used their tracking kit which is a little different than their shed kit and worked great with my GSP...

She did find a small shed last weekend behind the house, I didn't train her to find sheds but she brought it back, I did however give her a few antlers to chew on during deer season.

Badass . I'd thought about trying to train mine to shed hunt, but it always got put on the backburner for other stuff. Maybe this offseason.

Ok so I'm gunna try and sum it up on shed hunting. Those kits that you can buy are crap. The antler is made of some kind of soft rubber and as we know it antlers are not soft or easy to hold. Start off by playing fetch with a real antler. Throw it and have Deek bring it to you. You also need to have a command that you only use when you want him to go find sheds "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" lol or just make up a word that you only use for shed hunting
Once he's retrieving it pretty good (which shouldn't take long if he's anything like his parents) you'll want to get some antlers without any human scent on them and hide them in ur yard. But don't walk to the spot where you hide them throw them out to a spot like in a bush by a tree, in some leaves anything you can think of that kinda conceals them visually.

Text I got from a trainer. If anyone may be interested.

May be some out there, the one I used for training tracking from Dog Bone was great - due to the absence of real deer blood prior to the season the hide and scent kit worked great to get her started - once the season started real blood took its place. Not everyone has access to real antlers that they can use to train.

My dog finds the shed with the dog food in it everyday. :rimshot: I found half a sixer once. Made it into a back scratcher
