Is that a new species or half a cow?

If half a cow you're wasting your money
Buy beef when it goes on sale
Cheaper and not a hassle

if you are doing it to save money on meat, you won't...we used to buy cows and have them slaughtered, but that became ineffective from a cost standpoint...

elaborate please.... I'm new to this too, I like grass fed meat...

I can get a grass fed calf for 4 bucks pp from a rancher I know... plus lets say 1 dollars pp for butchering and packing. I cant get grass fed ground meat at the store for less than that.

GF Beef retail prices around BR
ground -6 pp
roasts:- 9 pp
ribeyes 23 pp
filet-- 32 pp

I still think I'm better off on the whole cow, am I missing something?

Why do you want this? The economics of it may not be as good a deal as you think. Especially if you don't consume all the beef in your freezer. Lots of groceries come off half a cow or half a hog. That said, if you have a large family or are a serious beef eater, it may be a viable option for you. Then again, if you just want one- go for it! Your choice

Only time I've seen it was at an auction last year. Half the ownership for unproven bull was $12,000. Beef is retarded right now. Stay away.

I primarily eat a caveman diet. My family usually eats 2-3 deer per year, plus every other year or so I may get 70 plus pounds of elk meat if lucky. I had a bad hunting season, I put 30 lbs of deer meat in the freezer. This is the first year I've thought about it. I priced a grass fed cow and prices ran around 7 pp for 280 lbs, a rancher my pops knows said he would sell me one for 4 pp, i get to pick it, they will slaughter then hang it for a few weeks, then I go to the butcher and tell him how to cut it and take it home... this sounds like a decent deal if I know I will eat a large portion of the meat before next hunting season

If you can get it for $4-6/lb processed it's absolutely a good investment.

My dad this one time when I was a kid. It was a great summer for me and my brother. We cleaned that freezer out before anybody knew what was going on.

what you are not taking into consideration is that when you pay $4 pp for the cow on the hoof, you are buying one hell of a lot of pounds that you are not going to eat...I don't know what the breakdown is, but head, guts, bones, hide, etc. combine to make up a good portion of the weight of a cow...

ETA: I would guess that you are only gonna put 30% or 40% of the gross weight of the cow in your freezer...

From what I've read you get about 60-65% of the live weight to the hanging weight.

Then from there you yield about 75% from the hanging weight. So for a generic 1,000 lbs. steer (live weight) you yield about 470 pounds (cut and wrapped).

the 4 dollars per pound is hanging weight, it does include some bones, but I'll take them for stock...

If I pay 4 dollars per pound, final cost of meat I will put in my mouth with processing, packing etc should be about 6.00-6.25 pp based on my research

I have bought 1/4 cow in the past. That was enough to supply me for just about a year. With a 1/2 cow you will probably end up with 100+ lbs of ground beef plus your other cuts it will fill up a 4' chest freezer. It is definitely cheaper per pound and nice to be able to pull beef out and cook whenever you want. Only downside is having to plan in advance and thaw the roasts a few days before you want to cook them.
