Looking to get an inflatable stand up paddleboard. I'm looking at Isle, Bote, Gilli, iRocker brands.

Does anyone SUP and can offer advice?

I saw one of these at Academy. Was wondering if anyone around here buys them. Not sure what brand it was but it was pricey.

A friend has a pair of the BOTE that he really likes - I believe those are over the $500 though. Costco has one from Hyperlite that's getting good reviews and I think Sam's has a similar one.

I had to do my last military assignment in California before retiring and I really got into scuba diving and paddle boarding. I had a Bote.

My SIL and BIL got custom made boards at place in Redondo Beach, CA which were nice but pricey.

Inflatables kinda suck, you need some mass down there to make it stable.

ETA: not just kinda. I rode one Sunday for at least a mile and the proper technique for a SUP is to jam the paddle in the water, out in front, and pull your hips toward it…pulling the paddle out when it reaches you. When you do this in an inflatable the instant you pull the paddle out the damn thing decelerates so fast it’s just really destabilizing.

If you just want to barely paddle around and not really ‘SUP’ correctly, by all means buy one of these cheap POSs. Ideally, you’d buy a stable, solid board and make your decision between a displacement board and a planing board…or a hybrid like a BOTE.

This is coming from someone with fricking SUP hanging in his GD living room…just took this picture:

Which probably means you shouldn’t listen to me because who TF has dumb shite like that?

Looks like it's a Bote. Comes with something free. No idea what it is.

What are you going to use it for?

If you're just playing around, get the cheap Amazon "SereneLife" one for $270.

If you are looking to fish or cruise distance, there are boards designed for that.

I bought a rigid board that was designed to be able to catch waves because I know I will mostly use it at the beach. I also made sure it was convertible to a windsurfing board, since I like to do that occasionally.

At the time it was made by BIC, and sold as the "Ace-Tec Wind"

The current version of my board:
Tahe

Again, if you aren't sure what you're going to use it for, get the cheap one until you figure it out.

They do, but it really depends on the application. I have a handshaped SUP that was built for waves and I have an inflatable BOTE. Neither are particularly good for long paddles or fishing off of. The inflatable serves its purpose very well but has issues. It doesn't track worth a shite and it flexes so it's brutal to paddle in any type of chop or wind because it can't break surface tension. The BOTE is built well but the foam started to pull up after a few years of use and travel. I fixed it with 3M spray. Keep in mind this thing stays balled up in its bag outside of 20 days of the year.

Issues aside, we travel to the Bahamas to fish a couple times a year and the inflatable SUPs have been a game changer. We can check the bags, they are easy to inflate with an alligator clip pump, and they can be strapped to the top of a rental car without destroying the roof. If you are paddling on flat water and need to be able to transport the thing without a truck, they're fine. The travel bags are trash though and get torn up by airport baggage guys. I expect that though.

I got mine from the board barn in Abita and the guy gave me a deal because it was the prior year's model. I'm not sure what they cost now but I've seen the lower models in Academy. I would say that it is not worth spending a lot on a "higher end" model inflatable. They are all going to have the same problems. Just buy from a reputable brand with a good warranty.

Here's a photo:
