Where?
When?

I bought a scientific angler 9' 4/5 wt for under $115 just to see if I would enjoy fly fishing in rivers. I use my duck hunting waders.

Do you have any shops near by?
You can walk into most fly shops and buy a really nice used rod. Reel isn't as important as the rod. It must match whatever you are trying to throw. In May I would imagine you want to fish for Big Browns up your way.
I would look for a 6 weight to start with. Another thing is the amount of pieces it breaks down to. 4 piece is great for traveling but not as good as a 2 piece.

Chops, get yourself a 8'6" 5-6 weight rod. Spent your money here. Look at Sage or Reddington. The reel won't matter a ton until you get into bigger fish.
Okuma makes some good, inexpensive reels. With reels the only thing you're truly focusing on I's a smooth drag. The rod is where the feel is at.

Cheap. Bass Pro or Cabela's will sell combos for $40-$80 bucks.
Redington combos run a little over a hundred for a decent rig, and Orvis will run you around $200 and up..
Good waders like Simms or Patagonia will run $250 and up. You can find discount stuff at the above sporting goods shops for $100 or less. Depends on what kind of quality you want.

Forgot about the wader question. If you are doing late spring and summer fishing then some simple Simms stocking foot waders will do. If you're gonna fish colder times of year then consider some 3 or 4 mil neoprene waders. Be prepared to spend at least 100 bucks on your waders. Go cheap on the wading boots. They really don't mattter too much.

whereabouts? You're gonna love it. I'm not a big fly fisherman, but I will do it in Montana.

ditto, thats what i did. i use my scuba boots for wading and just let my legs get wet. i have used wading socks (borrowed) and tennis shoes with success.

It's been a lomg time since I actually fly fished for trout in North Arkansas. I'll play with bream around here every once in a while...
I do have some legit gear though... I have a 5 or 6 wt. St. Croix rod with an Orvis reel. I've always rocked my duck hunting waders. You have to be careful though because slick rocks and rubber boots aren't a great match. The felt lined boots over stocking foot waders are the way to go if the waders are for fly fishing only.

This is my time of year. I love to flyfish. I have a decent saltwater rig I payed around 220 for but have never used it.
I mainly use Walmark specials with a double tapered floating line for Bream, Warmouth and schooling Bass, plus Jorts for waders.

Most of the water conin down whichever river you'll be fishing WILL be fed by snow melt. Cold. But, long johns plus some water proof waders equals tolerable. If you're cold by nature then consider some thin neoprene. I just always hated sweating in those damn things.
But definitely get some chest waders...there is nothing more miserable than having balls so shriveled that you can't find them.

So jealous. If you need a guide, I can recommend you one (If he's back in Bozeman from Maui). He's originally from Lake Charles. Guaranteed good time.

what river?
I fly fished the Snake River a long time ago but we destroyed the trout along that river

good deal. i am more worried about being too hot vs too cold. i know the water temp will be much, much colder than what i am accustomed to wading in, but i don't want to have to purchase then return or exchange because i bought the wrong damn thing.

Long time lurker here - about time I added something to the conversation.
Cabela's has a 9' 4-piece 6-wt RLS+ combo on sale right now for $159 - normally $300+. I own the same rig and it is a steal at that price.
Entry-level stocking-foot breathable waders from Simms or Patagonia should fit the bill. I just bought some pretty decent Simm's felt-sole wading boots for $99.
Enjoy Montana - it's an awesome place to fish.
