I’m not an OT baller but looking to upgrade my 27ft cat transducer to something that will read bottom at cruise around 32mph in the GOM and also just give better overall service in 150-400 ft. I currently have a gt30 transom mount and a Garmin gpsmap1040xs. I’ve been on thehulltruth but can’t find my specific help.

I think I’d prefer to spend a little more for the M265lm with the dual frequency ability and not having to put a hole for the through hull. Both are 1000w. I can already get water temp from my other transducer. Obviously the through hull maybe better sometimes with the B175m but I feel like not having a hole plus the dual frequency low + medium would give the edge?

Anyone have real world experience with a new transducer upgrade?

Thoughts?

Went through your exact dilemma. Ended up going with M265LH. I went with Low/High because we mainly fish for tuna and swordfish. It read very clear and crisp down to 1200ft+ on low, and same on high for the 0-400ft range for tuna (didn’t really try to look deeper on high).

I’ve never used a medium band transducer, always stuck with traditional low/high. Either way I think you’ll be happy with the M265. It’s a beast for a 1k ducer. I think you get more versatility with the M265 over the 175 since you get 2 frequency bands.

Have the gain pretty high in this pict because we were trying to see if we could mark a swordfish. The column of noise was from reversing boat with engines. But in general it gives you a great picture.

Great info! Just to be clear you went with the M265 which is in hull and not one of the thru hull options?

Correct. Yellow box in bilge. No issues with image quality shooting thru the hull. Also could read bottom at cruise speeds just fine as well (non-stepped hull).

I'm in the same market, any reason you aren't considering the TM (transom mount) model? I'm leaning that route to avoid messing with the hull, I'm also in the market for a bigger boat which would allow me to transfer the unit easily. I'm running 2 - 12" Simrads on a 27' Cat, I'm looking at adding a TM265C-LM.

I put an b175m on my twin vee this past winter and used it all summer. Works great. Marks bottom in 3000 ft while sitting still. Running will mark down to about 1k. I also have a gt52hw, but I almost never use it now. The 175m does great in shallow water too

Transom mounts are great for slow speed or stopped, but moving there’s almost always bubbles from the hull which will interfere with your reading. Once you get over a certain price point everyone thru hulls pretty much. It’s just better.

ETA: this is for deeper water 150+ ft.

Good stuff, so you have noticed a big difference going from the gt52 to b175m?

Following as I am looking at the same transducer for my boat in the spring. Trying to get something to hold bottom while running and see down to at least 1500 ft as we plan to start do some deep dropping next year. You mentioned the hull truth so I'll post a link to Semperfifishing who is a sponsor on there. He will answer any and all questions to help you choose the transducer that will suit your needs best.

So my Garmin is not able to use the M265 as apparently it runs both frequencies together, I thought you could choose which one. So I’ll have to go with a B175m it looks like.

What Garmin do you have? Mine was hooked to a 7612XSV, could select between low or high bands. If you have an XSV model it should be capable.

Non-XSV models will require a GSD “black box” to get 1kW output regardless.

1040XS. I was told I could do a 1kW but I honestly haven't 100% verified that in writing.

Ah. Yeah the 1040XS is single band Chirp 1kW, or traditional 1kW dual band 200hz/50hz non chirp. I think you could use the M265 still, just not the Chirp capability. Would have to set it up as “traditional 200/50” in the setup. Or just go with the 175.

But it is 1kW.
