yes, they usually want $100 a day if you puck them up early, so it's best to go around 11 and offer a cheaper rate.

May be a crazy question but how are their landscape skills? Desperately need some stuff done but the wife and I tend to kill EVERYTHING we plant. So looking to get plant suggestions then we will purchase then have them plant all. Also want water and lighting done.

What do you pay for temp labor? Last I checked it was double what I can pay cash for. Plus the temp labor guys are usually worthless.

It's been about a year, but I think it was $15 an hour. I've used them about 7 times. They were all polite, worked hard and tax paying Americans that were just down on thier luck or made bad career decisions.

If you are asking if they can recommend plants for your landscaping, I wouldn't recommend that, as they don't really have any idea what your tastes are...if you want them to plant the plants and haul dirt/mulch, they will do a great job for that kind of work.

that will just depend on the particular group of guys that are there on that day....I wouldn't expect them to do work that an electrician would do, but they can certainly dig trench and install pipe or wiring as long as someone is around who knows the technical stuff.

No, but once I was approached by a crack prostitute in a Home Depot parking lot and for a second I considered hiring her. I decided not to. Probably a good decision.

Yes, it's awesome. Be nice and generous when you get some serious stud workers. I figure about $15/hr if I'm going to have them all day. Do a few other nice things like a cheap lunch and some beers and they're ecstatic. If you only need them for a few hours, realize they won't get another gig that day so be up front about it and be prepared to go $20ish/ hr.

Bottom line, I might seem uber cheap or generous from the experiences I've described but everyone I've hired has been grateful. I've done it 10 or 15 times and I've never once had a bad experience. It's really eye opening to see how hard most of these people are willing to work.

I've never seen them at any of the Lafayette stores. Where can I find a crew around here?

2-3 guys and yourself and you can do a month of honey-dos in a day. What I do is have a list of stuff to do and prioritize. What I have learned is that with prior, proper planning you can get an amazing amount of work completed in a day.

I couldn't really answer that because I don't spend much time in that area and any reason I'm there wouldn't bring me by the typical places I'd see them.

In both Houston and NOLA, there are always a few sitting out under any trees along the parking lot edges of most every Lowe's or Home Depot. There are also known places in Houston where people looking for day labor consistently go that aren't in front of home improvement stores. Perhaps someone who's more familiar with your area can chime in.

Funny, this thread got me motivated to start the landscaping I've been procrastinating on. I hired 2 guys in 10 minutes to dig out the mud from my front and back gardens and replace it with some garden soil I had dumped into the back of me and my neighbor's truck. Just a ton of brute force labor in doing this job. I'm going to handle the actual replanting bit by bit all this week during the evenings. I was quoted $1500 by a lawn service and these guys will be done in about another hour for a total labor cost of $200. Meanwhile, I made some burgers and am about to throw them on the grill so all of us can destroy them for a late lunch. When they're done, I'm going to drive them back to anywhere close to where I picked them up. I consider this a win for everyone and like I said last night... awesome...

Drive them back to the border and leave them for dead. Thanks for contributing to one of Americas main problems.

Holy heyzeus man, "Leave them for dead?" I hope this is mostly hyperbole because I don't know how anyone could be that obtuse towards someone who's just trying to better their life. They put in a solid effort and I rewarded them fairly for it. For the record, one was a fricking ginger and the other a Mexican who spoke perfect English. I venture to guess that our Nation's problems' are much more complex than you're making it out to be.

Keep supporting these people. You will be the first one crying about deportation when one breaks into your home and rapes your wife
