When the rivers up, you can catch them off the side of the levee. I saw goodats cousin, Maleek with a bunch of blue catfish near LSU on several occasions

Just fish off the levee near the "park". Shouldn't be too hard to get to the bank from there depending on the level, and it may be up to the concrete steps. I haven't done it in a few years but catching catfish on the riverbank is prettymuch idiot proof provided you use enough weight and some durable bait. The river is loaded. I used to kill time on the bank a little further down from there and it was nothing to catch half a dozen over 5lbs in an afternoon.

Does anyone actually eat any of the fish they catch out of the Mississippi? You have to figure that all runoff of thousands of homes from things like round up, pesticides, and any other chemicals people dump into ditches and drains all eventually wind up in the Mississippi River. That's not including industrial dumping into rivers and streams thats never reported. Being this far down the river I would assume there are some nasty chemicals in that water.

One of my ChE professors at LSU did some sampling of local water bodies, as he was kind of on the environmental side, and according the him the MS is relatively clean. He studies he apoxic zone in the gulf caused by fertilizer runoff. The sheer volume of water and bio activity helps to keep contaminant concentrations low. He told me that smaller rivers are much more susceptible to contamination, and he would rather eat a fish out of the MS than the Amite. Lots of commercial fish come from the MS as well, and I'm sure they're subject to testing for heavy metals etc.

That said the catfish I caught were pretty muddy tasting blues, and I just threw most back and drank a beer or two.

The area a few hundred yards north if there. There's a "park" that's really just a few water features they built to dress up the levee. Near there are some big concrete steps with Baton Rouge in big letters. Any area along there that you can get to the bank without sinking hip deep in mud, you'll catch fish. Fair warning, I fished further down closer to LSU, so I don't know what parts of that bank are private, but if you just use some sense and stay away from the casino I'm sure you'll be fine. There's usually people hanging out around the concrete steps if it's a nice day, and you'll have to steer clear of the bums.

Civil Engineers have a saying, "The answer to pollution is dilution." I agree with him. Eating catfish from MS river is much safer than from somewhere like Bayou Manchac.

Get on ya bike grab ya gear and peddle ya arse to the river go up river looking for a good place to get to the bank bank with those big rocks is steap and good water sandy shore is shallow far out. Like said ya need lots of weight and big circle hooks most anything works for bait if ya dont find many spots ya like next time go south. Best to try below a point the fish hang there to get out of the current. If ya get a bait on or close to the bottom you will catch a few. This time of year with rising water is good.

There are monster catfish in the Mississippi and the water is cleaner than many other rivers in the state.

If you catch a catfish that looks yellow and the heads kind of flat I'll take him off your hands. They aren't very good, but I have my great aunts recipe that makes them tolerable.
