I've always shot a 30-06 but a friend of mine is trying to sale me a 300 UltraMag he bought for his kid. The kid is scared of it

What's the recoil difference in an 06 and a 300 ?

My 06 kicks like a mule.

Was thinking long and hard on one or a 30 Nosler. After research though it wasnt worth the extra money and recoil so decided on 300wm. You really don't get your money's worth on those ultra big Magnums until your bullet weights gets into the low-to-mid 200 and heavier. Since I will probably never hunt anything bigger than elk I have no need for the heavier bullets.

None if you put on a muzzle brake

What kind is each gun. I have model 700 06 that will drive Tacs with reloads all day. KICKS is an understatement more like tooth loss. Now the 300 ultra browning I have shoots well and also is pretty rough. Bought a limbsaver pad and put on ultra with no issues now. Both guns of course are bolts. The rest of the 06's I have (3) are not even close to these 2 bad boys. Dang 338 isn't even close to them.
Best advice is to go shoot it and find out or by a pad for it

Yup, a brake can do wonders.

Ive shot a 300 Rum to 1760 yards.

ETA: Dude is an idiot for buying a 300 rum for a kid.

If you think a 30-06 kicks, you do not need a 300 RUM.

How big is this guy's kid?

Ballistically speaking, there's not much difference in a 338 lapua and a 300 RUM.

Muzzle brakes are great, but you better wear hearing protection. It will literally cause permanent hearing loss.

We're trying to talk about shooting sports here, and you're intersecting with health and safety gibberish. Take that to the Soccer Board. There are real men in this thread.

Meh, I was told jacking off would make me go blind, but I barely have to use my walking stick

I've shot them before. It depends on how heavy the gun is and if it has a brake or can. If you are hunting its obviously not gonna be bad but practicing with it will hurt your wallet and shoulder. Also, you may develop a flinch. If someone bought it for their kid, they are not smart.

If the kid is less than 18, what kind of idiot would to that to their kid?

A buddy of mine has one with a break. He hunts with it on a pipeline with a good scope and a lead sled.

Get it.

.300 rum is way drastic mega overkill for deer (and elk, and moose, and everything else that isn't going to eat you) but the REALLY cool thing about it is there are factory loads available for it that duplicate .30-06 ballistics. Loaded to full power it's an incredible long range caliber.

It really is a great utility caliber only because there are factory watered down loads available for it. It's a shame that concept never was adopted for the .338 win mag because that would be sweettttt

I have a 300 RSAUM. I don't feel it kicks much more than my 30-06

Yea that's a horrible idea for a kid, and really a horrible idea for anybody to shoot deer with unless they're using the low power stuff.

This is the one rare instance you'll see me suggest something like this as a potentially good idea, only because of the low power loads available.

If using heavier loads, I imagine it bloodied his nose purely from the recoil alone.

Rem 700 LSS
200 gr Partition
104.5 grns Retumbo powder
3100 fps @ 25 ft
IMO recoil from this load is comparable to a 3 1/2 mag in a light synthetic 12ga shotgun

Laminated stock makes this a heavy rifle. I find it has more of a "push" than a "kick".

Have reloaded many different rounds and I find this rifle likes everything "hot". All have been absolute tack drivers.

FYI Hot = increase amount of powder until primers fully flatten then back off .25 grns (for a Remington)
