If I want to use the AR AK or whatever, I will not go out to buy a 5 rd mag because all one needs is 5 rounds.

It's 100% legal. I use a mini-14 with 20 round mags. I use Barnes 70 grain TSX loaded over Ramshot TAC. 7 deer have been killed with that round out to 150 yards with no tracking required on any of them. All but one was a broad shot. The other one was in the arse from my 10 year old nephew, but the bullet made it all the way through the chest cavity and dropped it. Just use a good bullet and make sure you can hit where you're aiming. Anyone who says a 223 isn't good enough hasn't been shot by one.
