An Alabama man has been cited by Louisiana authorities for allegedly shooting 14 seagulls, an ibis and a heron with a 12-gauge shotgun at a residence in Lake Charles.

Louisiana wildlife agents acted on a tip that someone was shooting seagulls on the night of May 11 and responded the following morning, the state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries said Tuesday. They found dead birds in an adjoining filed and trash can next to the house, as well as empty shotgun shells.

Austin Wilson, 22, of Geneva, Alabama, pulled into the driveway during the inspection and was questioned, the statement said. He allegedly admitted to shooting the birds with a 12-gauge.

The agents said they found 14 seagulls, one ibis and one heron.

I never really thought about seagulls being protected, they seem like such a trash animal. But they are migratory… whoops.

I never really thought about it either. I was trying to look up how much he may be charged and it’s just the basic migratory bird statute of “up to $15,000.” It looks like fines are all over the place though.

In my quick search there was a story about a man up north “accidentally” kicking one for stealing his cheeseburger. He was fined $124. Apparently a woman picked it up and brought it to lifeguards, who told her to leave it alone. The bird then bit her and a child.

Sounds like a Florida story, but happened in New Hampshire.

Yeah long ago, my cousins from South Carolina talked about getting in trouble for taking Alka Seltzer on the tour boat to Ft. Sumpter and throwing it into the air and watching the gulls dive down on it...and then having their belly explode. Never knew if this was fact or fiction.

I have a theory that if you go to any Walmart parking lot in the United States on a summer day then you can and will fined a bunch of loud arse sea gulls

I have heard it but nevet saw it in person. Pretty shitty thing to do but kids will do some shitty stuff...there wasn't an animal safe when I got my first BB gun LOL...including my 2 older sisters. Daddy straightened me out right quick...

When I was a kid I would crab with a chicken neck and a spinning rod and reel instead of just a line. When I'd get bored I would open the bail, toss the chicken neck in the air and seagulls and pelicans would swoop down and grab it (no hook). I would let them run a while, close the bail and fight em' like a jet powered kite until they dropped the chicken neck. Pelicans were especially fun.

Heard of a baw in Rayne who used to shoot whooping cranes, said the meat was delicious. seagulls are nasty arse birds, doubt they are as good eating as whooping crane.

What about pigeons? Have a bird feeder outside and we used to get a few here and there, but now have dozens hanging out below the feeder. Our cats run em off, but they come back. Wipe out a feeder in no time.

They eat the hell out of them in Europe. I don't why they wouldn't make a meal down here.
