Posted this a while back on another forum...

Tossed a castnet at one of the LSU lakes, and it sure as hell didn't feel like bait fish in it so I pulled it up and was greeted to this:

C&Red it... The damn thing was sitting in like 3 feet of water, about 5 feet from the shore.

I was told it was a smallmouth buffalo, which seems to be accurate... is it?

Damn thing weighed like 40lbs, possibly higher. Would love to catch one on a rod and reel, as I imagine they'd be fun to drag in even though they aren't game fish per se.

However, I hear they're really hard to catch on a line... What would they strike on?

We would fish carp by using an ultra small hook like you would use for panfish baited with a doughball. Sometimes we would simply smash a piece of white bread around a hook.

I think I read doughballs somewhere also... And ditto on the small hook.

Only problem is I assume a doughball will disappear way before a buffalo strikes due to bream, catfish, etc :-O

That can be a problem, carp will also hit cherry tomatoes..

That'd likely be a much better solution... So I'm assuming buffalos are similar to carp, at least as far as bait preference goes?

We've always used the terms interchangeably...possibly incorrectly, not sure.

Is that a grass carp?

Not a grass carp. Buffalo is the most common name I believe. I have caught a few on jigs while white perch fishing, they would definitely be tough to actually target though

Eta: originally thought it could be a drum but after searching it is definitely a buffalo

Not sure, we call those Blue Bufalo. I've always thought the yellowish ones were the grass carp but I'm not well versed in their proper names.

We used to catch a bunch of them muthas in gill/trammel nets and they make a mess. Older guy would call them "Golden Ladies of the Sea."

To the OP, it's not 40 lbs either. Hard to tell with nothing to scale but would guess maybe 10.

Just google grass carp. They have a gold color and aren't so football shaped. I was thinking 20lbs but I wasn't there, so if you say 40 I will believe it

Definitely way more than 10. The picture doesn't give great perspective, but the fish was about 2.5x-3x the length of my size 14 shoe, and was extremely wide. It wasn't at all like handling a big catfish (and I've caught 20lb catfish much smaller than this), this thing felt like it was a solid frickin' hunk of meat.

Was awesome when it was out of the water because every time it would flop, you could feel it int he ground

Smallmouth buffalo get huge... I think the record is 55 or 60 something

To put it in perspective, here is a picture of a supposed 40lb carp

Okay, I'll give you closer to 20 than 10.

Buffalo are natives

Carp are not

Buffs are finicky eaters

That's what I hear... I hear they are extremely rarely caught on a line.

Even so, do you know of any ways to catch on a line?

I also hear they make for good eating if cooked right. Hell, maybe I should go toss the cast net some more and pull in another one and eat that sumbitch. They are considered commercial fish, not game fish, so they are legal to net.

Never heard of anybody eating them. That may be due to not many being caught though. I heard grinnel was good and I never woulda believed it from the looks of them ugly bastards so them buffalo may be tasty. Catch a sombitch and let us know
