Advice on shooting Woodies
Posted by OMapologist on 12/8/15 at 3:28 pm00
Apologize in advance for length.
I've got this new opportunity to hunt some land that has a creek running through it. The creek runs between 10-30 feet across and 2-6 ft deep I'm guessing. Can't wade across. It's about a .5 mile stretch of creek I'm working with.
On a recent scouting trip around the property I jumped a total of 10 ducks in a couple of different spaces. I've got these spots marked.
I don't have any kind of boat or kayak. Should I buy a floating tube or kayak so that I can get across the creek to get downed birds and/or make it easier to get down the creek?
Would ya'll stalk from the bank, from the water, or setup at a certain spot and wait for ducks to come in? What time might different strategies work best?
Just need some advice on how to fold some of these birds.
**I'm a novice duck hunter if you couldn't tell.**
Thanks

With wood ducks you have to be where they want to be. You will rarely call them in like mallards or other migratory ducks. I would definitely get something so that you are able to retrieve the birds like a pirogue. If you found them in a spot try to setup there earlier in the day and see if they come back to the same spot.

Buy a couple of woodie dekes and set up one of the places you jumped them. Don't bother with most of the commercially available woodduck calls.
The ducks likely cruise the slough and come down in specific locations due to food availability so keep your eyes peeled for water oaks near the slough that might be dropping acorns into the water.

Approach a bend in the creek.
Spot ducks one way or the other.
Walk back into the woods 30 to 40 yards and pop back out on the creek where you think the ducks were.
Jump shoot them.
For retrieval, a stick tied to paracord you can throw across the creek and drag them back can work as well as an ultralight fishing rod with a tiny torpedo if it isn't too thick.
You gotta want it. It's a pain in the arse...

Lead? As in toxic shot?

We used to creep them in creeks around Toledo Bend. We would walk thru the woods until you see an oak tree hanging over the creek, get even with the oak tree and slip up to the edge. When you see the other edge of the water, look for ripples, if they are there, pop over and kill the ducks making said ripples.
Repeat for the length of the creek.
I've killed more woodies doing this than any other way ever.

I'd jump shoot/stalk them myself. Try to get pot shots since I'm guessing you can't shoot well being a novice. No since wasting time setting up for them, they might've swam 100 yards from where they lit whenever they came in. Use the creek bends and cut banks to your advantage. The birds were/are probably camping under red oaks with acorns falling or sweet pecans, etc. i.e. under a feed tree. Make note of those trees and be on the ready when approaching. Mighty fun. I love shooting Woodrow's i.e. "squealers" and not them big orange bodied, pink legged coonass squealers either dammit.

Wood ducks always started our morning off in the flooded timber. We'd have to be on our toes right at the start of shooting hours.
They'd fly through real early and then it was onto the mallards and gadwalls. So if you're gonna try to pass shoot em, find out where they like to light and be ready for a quick shoot right at the start of shooting hours.
You could also go to one end of the creek and have a buddy on the other end that would walk and push them to you for some shots.

That works too.

Listen, Look, shoot.... They're faster than most ducks...
Woodies are smaller birds and will look much higher than larger ducks...

Corn banks, take plug out of gun, shoot lead. Profit.
Like others said, have a friend walk the opposite side of the creek and push them towards you. They like to pile up in spots in the creek with a lot of cover/trash. Don't think you are going to sneak up on them cause they will more than likely see you unless you have very thick cover. I have been able to call them in to decoys quite a few times. Listen to their calls and mimic as best possible.

yep, once they get jumped they will fly up or down the creek for a distance, not just fly out through the woods.
