I really don't know what to do, if it is dead calm I might let him go, if not, I think I will take him inshore and do something in the bay boat and just pass on the trip. I absolutely cant say no to him at this point, and that is my fault for mentioning it to him. I am usually one to be pretty cautious in what I let him get in the middle of......

shite, he was trying to find outdoor channel this morning to see if fishing was on.

Lil dude is tough as nails. I'm more worried abt my 17 y/o. How will she survive w/o cellphone coverage?. However, she has been demanding a trip all summer, so may as we'll let her try it. Overnight trip out of Cocodrie. Told Alx the tuna fairy might visit Sunday.

45miles on a 60+? along as the seas arent ridiculous he will be fine. you might bring an ipad or something to keep him occupied as well.

Give him Dramamine or half a Dramamine and let him sleep on the way out maybe when you get to the fishing spot he will wake up and not feel sick.

As posted earlier, you need to figure out if he is prone to getting motion sickness. Has he ever been carsick and if so does it happen regularly? If he does, I would not take him.

Now with that being said, I have been taking my son offshore since he was 4. He absolutely loves it and has never been sick.

Lastly, kids love the cabin. The quickest way for someone to get seasick is in the cabin. Keep him out in the open in moving air.

Forgot, make sure you take the proper sized live vest. Just in case.

I know you have received a lot of advice on this, so here is some more.

Like you said, you have mentioned it to him and he is excited about it. I have a 16 y/o son, he went with me at 7. Had a great trip. Wish we could do more.

Take him, don't mention motion sickness, and have a blast. Give us updates when you get back.

If forecast is good then go for it. I agree with others regarding lifejacket and plenty to eat and drink - stay hydrated. One or two times on the business end of a rod and reel and he will be talking about it for a while. Help him, exercise patience, and plenty of pics! Enjoy making the memory and good luck!

Well, my weekend proved that everyone, even though their opinions differed...can be right!

I wasn't taking him, but the captain and other Dads guilted me, so I caved...calling for calm seas and a quick trip in a kick arse boat.

Long and short, we had just some small seas, a great trip, caught some really, really nice snapper..the boy had a ball, no issues except for the bruise on his cheek from getting ON the boat at the camp. Will try to get some pics up, a 5 year old and a 15 pound snapper make for some fun! He insisted on reeling it in and holding it under his arm like the grown ups. I supported the rod and let him make every turn of the reel on the first one. He got a standing O from the guys on the platform!

But, If it had gotten any rougher, or if the trip had been any longer than a day trip, or if it had been many degrees hotter...it would have been a tough day. I got lucky.

Thanks for the advice everyone.
