Im finally close to buying my first "real" boat. I don't know much about the history of the motor so I wanted to get opinions on here. It's a 2009 250 Mercury Verado 4 stroke. I know everyone has their favorite brands much like Ford v. Chevy but what can you tell me about the Verado?

And I'm not asking about this specific Verado on the boat (has 140 hours on it btw)....just Verados in general. Have they been good motors? Problems?

No first hand experience but every water patrol/ state water police/ game warden I've ever been stopped by except one has had Verados on them.

Take that completely for what it's worth, which is probably nothing.

Just like any modern day outboard, they are only as good as your servicing dealer. There are many inexperienced dealers out there who can make ownership a nightmare, no matter the brand. Have it checked out by an experienced and certified Verado dealer and you should have many years of trouble free service. With such low hours on a 7 year old engine, the entire fuel system will need to be cleaned and serviced. We are in Baton Rouge if we can help you out.

Fwiw, it hasn't been just sitting for that long. The boat was used sparingly but by all accounts runs excellent. I haven't taken it out yet but i definitely will and also have it thoroughly gone through by the right folks before pulling the trigger. Thx!

Not familiar with the Verado but from my observations on the water being around commercial fisherman and tournament anglers alike I'll probably never buy a Mercury, new or used. My 2 cents.

Verados were released in 2004. The first generation included all 2004, 2005 and 2006 engines. There were several updates to the first generations in 2007. Many first gens were updated by Mercury, on their dime. The 2009 you're looking at would be a second generation. This horse has been beaten to death over on thehulltruth.com. There are a lot more boat owners on that site and that will give you a much better idea of the Verado's reliability. The general view of most on this website is that they don't like Mercury based on he said, she said or what someone's uncle's boss' brother-in-law's cousin's ex-husband has on their boat.

I've had the same Mercury since 1990. It has never left me stranded.
