AC experts please help to see if I am getting ripped off.

I posted in the OT as well but figured I might get some help here too.
I have to have some AC work done and they have to do some procedure where they recapture the coolant from the unit.
Anyway they want to charge me $196 just for this procedure alone. Does this seem too high, low or average or are they ripping me off?

Not an ac expert but it doesn't hurt to price another company

I am not an expert, but the EPA cracked down on R-22 and pushed the price through the roof...

They have to capture it to do anything big anyway. Sounds like a bullshite charge considering what's involved.

Ditto, wouldn't take much coolant to hit that mark, or sibt.

This is because the gubment is now making HVAC companies track coolant used/lost and fine them if their numbers don't add up. An AC man will never be able to catch 100% so they are passing the cost on to the consumer. With that being said, that number does sound a bit high. I just went through this a few months ago. I had a guy change my A coil on the side but he didn't budge when it came to the regulated freon controls.

My warranty company is covering the replacement parts and labor but they don't cover this one procedure which obviously has to be done with the repair. I have to pay out of pocket for it so I was wondering if they were jacking up the price or if it was reasonable.

Dude is making side/extra money.

Thats extremely high. My father in law owns an AC company and doesn't charge a dime for it. Just go release the freon yourself.

If they are replacing the unit,Let it out. Then they can`t charge you for it.

I paid 400 on a job to have it captured on 4 units and have the units dismantled so we could get them off the roof.

I do ac work and although it's true freon does need to be recovered, never heard of someone charging for it.

When you say capture, do you mean remove the freon, do the work, then recharge with the same freon. Because you may want to check to be sure that is exactly what they are doing. That price sure sounds like they are going to remove the freon, perform the work, then Recharge with new freon.
A lot of AC guys won't recharge with "used" freon.
