I don't know much about genetics but I'd be proud to take this deer with my crossbow, just a different sense of pride with an archery kill and so far I've only shot spikes with it.

You're supposed to shoot the ones with the least genetic potential.

You're welcome

1.5 yo deer, he has beast mode potential. 2.5 yo deer he deserves one more year to prove he can put on points and mass. 3.5 to 6.5 yo he is a cull. 7.5 yo he is an old buck past his prime but may have had a hell of a set back in the gap. All relative to age

If there were a correlation between neck length and head size to how big of bucks they'd have, we'd be loaded with 200" bucks. Our does look like pot bellied giraffes

That's why I shoot them with a tranquilizer, then extract DNA and run it through my mobile genetic analyzer. Once I'm determined it matches the DNA markers from deer previously proven to be genetically inferior, I photo-document the deer's characteristics and release him. I then follow his tracks and stalk him for a kill with my longbow. That's how I cull.

Glad to see there’s another crossbower here. Nothing wrong with shooting spikes, you say it like you’re disappointed. As for this 5 pointer that’s wide as some good booty meat, I’d shoot him and be proud of it, just like the button I shot Sunday, with my Horton crosser.

I was actually aiming for the doe beside him but you know how the jitters get when you been up for three days on them tin foil cigarettes. That plus the glare off the headlights, it's a wonder I managed to put a good shot on him right behind the ribcage.
