How do y’all like the Barnes vortex in a 7-08? How do they perform as far as a pass through shots? I can’t find the federal partitions I normally shoot anywhere.

2 of my buddies shoot them in 308 and they love them pretty sure allways getting pass throughs Solid construction bullet shouldn’t have any issues with getting pass throughs at resonable ranges.

Shoot it in 300blk and it's awesome on deer. I pretty much have shelved my 7-08 for now due to ammo.

They’re going to pass through almost no matter what. That’s the only real knock on them, at closer ranges they have a tendency to zip through, but a double lung is still a double lung.

Same. No plans on switching. Gonna try them out in a few other calibers, too.

That's all I hunt with in 5.56 (70 grain) and 300 blk (110 grain). They should retain a lot of bullet weight for pass throughs and as long as you have adequate velocity should expand just fine - should be no problem with 7-08.

I load 140 sierra game kings for my 7mm08 and the 165 for my wife’s 308. They are accurate and give good performance on deer. We’ve killed 6 with them in the last couple years and only had to trail one.

It'll work fine. Penetrate great and open up ok. Will bust em up less than partitions do.

no experience in 7-08, but I shoot the ttsx in a .243 and the lrx in .280ai. I like them a lot and will be working up loads with them for other rifles when I get around to it.

Penetration/pass through is excellent and they generally don't tear up much meat. Some complain that they don't leave much of a blood trail either compared to more traditional bullets. My sample size on double lung shots is small, but I generally agree. Nothing went far enough for that to matter though. They retain pretty much all their weight and like to go fast. Most will drop down about 15-20 grains compared to a traditional lead bullet and push them hard. I would think in 7-08 you'd be looking for a 120gr version started a little north of 3k fps.

I've gotten to the point I only use Barnes TTSX in whatever I'm shooting when I'm hunting

I like it. Using the 120 gr TTSX I've killed deer in 284 Win (1), 7-08 (3) and 260 Remington (1). I use long barrels bolt action handguns so my loads lose a little velocity compared to. a rifle. OTOH, the velocity of the 284 loads prob pretty similar to a rifle load. In all deer I was satisfied w/ the bullet. All shots had complete penetration w/ decent entrance and exit holes. Those that ran didn't run too far and left a good blood trail. The TTSX is a preferred bullet for me.
Entrance wound of Doe shot w/ 120 gr TTSX in 284 Win.

The only 7-08 ammo I have used to get consistent pass through shots is 140g Sierra boat tail:

Over 44g of this:

My 7-08 is the only rifle I’ve hunted with for exactly 20 years.

I haven’t found a store load that works anywhere close to above combo.
