I know the round is way too much for protection (too much recoil, too slow of follow shots, etc.)

But if one had to use it for protection (against a human, not a bear) what kind of damage would it do it if were a shot directly on center mass? I ask because I've been told by some it will just be a narrow hole and nothing more because of the velocity and weight of the projectile. Others have told me that it will leave a massive exit wound and it will overall frick someone up no matter where you shoot them

Would a chest shot with a .500 S&W 350 grain or 500 grain load be worse damage wise than any .45? Or would it not be due to high velocity?

Listen here footjob! I dont know what would happen but it would likely end in death. Dead is dead is dead is dead. Like this thread.

Interesting question you ask, but i would suggest it would be a massive exit wound. It's a very good chance the bullet would expand, which is what causes the destruction.

Now, it might keep going another 100 yards after that

Soft point .500 S&W would probably be pretty devastating at typical self-defense distances. There's enough lead to expand considerably and retain enough mass to kill the attacker and his buddy hiding behind the fridge...at your neighbor's house. I have a DE in .50AE and it is pushing a 300gr hollow point at almost 1400fps, over 30 grains of H110 behind it. My 9mm loads are 124gr with about 5 grains of powder. .500 S&W is a big step up from .50AE.

I had a great uncle that killed a man in self defense with a .22 single shot rifle with a shot to the stomach.

I'm trying to imagine a full power load .500 with a frangible bullet. 180 grains or so. It would basically split into four tumbling and careening .25 caliber bullets on impact.

I shoot with a guy who took a .416 to the leg at about 50 yards on a ricochet. He has a scar on each side of his shin that looks like a 12v cigarette lighter burn.

Underwood makes a 700gr load for it now. I could only imagine what that would do.

Put i to you like this. I don't think you would need a follow up shot.

Miss mostly, need the longest barrel for the .500 to stabilize it. Considering a ball .50 BMG is only about 650gr, that's a huge chunk of lead.

Yes it would be bigger. Much bigger.

If you are using hard cast bullets, The hole may not be as big.
