My first was a spincast. Wondering what everyone's experiences were like with your children's first reel. Is it easier to go with a spincast or spinning reel?

My 4 y/o is getting a zebco because there’s 98% chance it ends up at the bottom of the lake.

Definitely spincast, but I like the "underspin" style that goes on a spinning rod and uses the trigger finger release as opposed to the top mounted reel with a thumb release. That way the weight of the reel is in a more natural position for a small child to hold. I also think the trigger finger release gives them more leverage and they have more strength in their trigger finger than in their thumb. Lastly it makes for an easier transition from their beginner reel to a spinning reel because they will already be accustom to the reel position and the idea of using their trigger finger to grab the line. A lot of the reel manufacturers offer one and they aren't all that expensive. I started 3 grandsons on them and they took to them really well.

I actually put a tether on the rod and attached it to my son’s PFD. But I agree with the zebco.

Cheap zebco
When he's ready for the upgrade the Zebco omega actually isn't terrible for a spincast and is around 50$

I still use a Zebco Omega to skip baits under docks.

My 5 year old has been using a spinning reel since last summer when he was still 4 because it's what we had around. I started out casting for him then got tired of that and taught him how to cast. He does it all on his own now and he even caught a limit of reds the other day.
