i'm getting the old man one of these for fathers day, he's been talking about wanting one for years. anyone got one or the other?

looks like the ruger SP101 3" barrel (model 5719) vs S/W model 627? the smith is much more expensive unless theres a comp model to the ruger i'm not seeing. use is on the hip at his place up in arkansas

help me out, i'm not knowledgeable about these, at all.

Both are awesome. Rugers are built a bit stouter and are cheaper but smiths have way better triggers. I have the s&w 627 with the 2 inch barrel and it is awesome

I have a Ruger GP100 Match Champion, might want to take a serious look at one for a great .357 Mag shooter.

The Ruger SP101 is meant more as a carry gun because it only has a 5 round cylinder. I would suggest the Ruger GP100 4" as a great all-around 357 if he has no intention of carrying it concealed.

The S&W 686P is in the same size ballpark as the GP100 but has 7 chambers in its cylinder. But it does have the dreaded "S&W keylock" which can lessen the enjoyment in the trigger pull, or so I've been told.

If it were me, I think the Ruger is a better value. It's an overbuilt platform, meaning it can take some of the hottest rounds you can throw at it with little wear on the gun. The Smith may have more refined of a feel but I'll take the durability of the Ruger over the Smith. But you can't go wrong with either one.

If it's to carry on his farm I'd like a 4 or 5" barrel.

Beast is right! I learned how to shoot a handgun on these.

If you don't mind spending money on your old man then I would recommend the S&W 586. My personal favorite wheel gun.

General rule of thumb, smiths are more refined and rugers are more rugged.

For a farm/ranch gun I would look at either a ruger GP100, smith 686 or 586, or a smith M66.

All are fine revolvers and have various materials and barrel lengths to suite what your old man likes.

Ruger SP 101 4 inch

The GP100 weighs much more. It is a pain to carry.

I have the same revolver as the bottom one in your picture. It's the most comfortable firearm in my hand. I bought it in 1991 for $125 from a guy I worked with. It's gotta be the best gun purchase I've ever made.

To the OP, I don't have any experience with the Rugers, but I own several S&W's and have no complaints whatsoever.

I have this gun and love it. It's also my 12yr old daughter's favorite gun to shoot.

Sounds like you're going to be taking a lot of range trips with the old man!
