35 Whelen is all that you need for hunting the south. I can't speak for folks in the Midwest or anywheres shooting deer 300+ yards but the 35 is good for 200-250 yrds. That's is plenty for down here and has the knock down of a semi truck hitting them. Lots of guys that I know are selling their .270's and 30-06's to hunt both riffle and prim with the 35. I'm going to get myself one this summer and any guns I buy after that will be for my son.

If you are going to use it more than 2 weeks a year then spend the money on the Thompson. With the short Bergura barrel is it a very nice woods gun. I shoot the 225gr and they pack a nice punch.

Ok. I think I read it that I can use weapon of choir during split, BUT the extra 2-3 weeks at end of Jan thru mid Feb are archery and primitive only.
Does this sound right?

In Ms you can hunt on private land with "weapon of choice" from opening day of rifle until the end of season.

Proposed rule change or next year in Louisiana would allow the use of any firearm during primitive season on private land.

I don't think this change is for allowing any rifle to harvest a deer during primitive season. I think this only removes the restriction of only being able to carry a 22 with ratshot along with your "primitive" weapon. Here's what is proposed to be removed...

It is unlawful to carry a gun, other than a primitive firearm, including those powered by air or other means, while hunting during the special primitive firearms segment. Except, it is lawful to carry a .22 caliber rimfire pistol loaded with #12 shot (ratshot only).

That only refers to what can be carried and not what can be used to hunt with.

If your max shot is 150 yards either will be fine. You won't know the difference and neither will the deer.

OP, you can hunt with any rifle on private in Mississippi at the end of the season.
The finest caliber for the fake primitive is the .38-55 WIN. Mild recoil and extremely effective. Hard to find, though.

I've shot a 45-70 but never killed a deer with one. I have a Remington 700 .35 Whelen killed several deer with it. I'd say the .35 bucks harder than the 45-70.

Here's how hunting goes with a .35: deer comes out, pull trigger, deer drops, ride wheeler into plot, load deer onto wheeler, go home.

I shot my last deer with a .45-70 Handi-Rifle at 10-15 yds shooting LeveRevolution. Bullet did not exit. Deer ran probably 20 yds before going down.

I shoot the Winchester 300 gr HP out of my 45/70. That's more than enough for a deer.
I bought a box of the Hornady when they came out but never killed one using them . The more I read about them I wasn't comfortable using them.

Why the hate for them...because of the meat damage they do? I had read they make a mess of it.

35 Whelen is objectively better. i posted this in the last vs thread

quote:

Max effective range for 444/45-70 is 150 yards, max for 35Whelen is 300 yards. So you have double the range, as well as 1000fps more velocity and 1000ft-lbs more energy at 100yds.

Only decent reason anyone should consider the others is if they're hunting near a property line and need a round that drops like a brick past 150

Very poor penetration and core/jacket separation are common with the squishy tips. They shoot well but terminal performance is poor to say the least.
